I'm taking 1800mgs 4 times a day and there's really no high but it keeps me off the booze. I'm tapering down 200mgs a day so in a bit it will all work out. ## Hello, Delance! How are you? No, there wouldn't be a high from this. Though many people misunderstand because it can help with some types of pain, it is not an actual analgesic. It is an anticonvulsant. Tapering down by that much a day could cause some withdrawal and rebound symptoms, such as dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea, nausea, pain and headaches, so please be careful. Do you have any questions or concerns? ## Valentin is a drug for many disorders you will not feel high on it.

My elderly mother is prescribed 800 gabapentin 3x daily. She sometimes takes only one or two doses. What effects will this have? ## Hello, MsDeb! How is your mother doing? It is more effective if taken at regular intervals and taking is on such an irregular schedule could cause various side effects, such as mood swings, headaches and increased pain, as reported by the NIH. It isn't actually harmful to do that, but it can cause some annoyances, such as those I listed above. Is she on any other medications?

Have been on Gabapentin for a year. Built up to 3200 a day for osteoarthritis in my feet. Decided to get off as it wasn't doing much for pain. My doctor brought me down to fast from 3200 to 1600 to 800 in 10 days. Now having stomach issues, anxiety, trouble sleeping, tightness in my chest. Been off of it for 8 days now. Does anyone know how long withdrawal lasts? Been told the higher the dose and time on it that it takes a while to feel better again. ## Hello, Sandy! How are you feeling? Have things improved, yet? There is really no precise time frame that can be given, because it can vary from person to person, it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to over a month. As listed by the FDA, other withdrawal effects may also include rebound pain, fever, chills, and diarrhea. ## No...

I take 800 mg 3x a day of Gabapentin for my diabetic neuropathy. Pain management is considering raising it to 900 mg 3x a day. In the past 3 months I have gained 26 lbs. My feet are also still burning and prickly. What is the highest dose I can be prescribed and could this be causing some of my weight gain? ## The highest dose a person can get prescribed is 2800mg.It's one awful drug to come off.I was on pregabalin and gabapentin for nearly 10yrs.The withdrawls are terrible x ## Thank you for the heads up. I will talk to my doctor about coming off now. ## Hi Monica, Just wanted to add that in response to your last question about weight gain, NIH.gov does list what they describe as "rapid weight gain" on gabapentin's list of side effects here: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealt...

I take 30 mgs of baclofen per day and was recently prescribed gabapentin 300mgs 3 x daily. The other day after taking my last dose of gabapentin, I became extremely lethargic and went to sleep. I awoke to my body slamming on the floor as I had rolled out of bed. This has never happened before. Is it the combination of the two meds that caused this? ## Hello, Zim! How are you? The lethargy may be due to the combination of the two. However, I've not heard reports of falling out of bed. It could've been due to very vivid dreaming, which the Gabapentin can sometimes cause. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes. Has it happened, again, or just that once? ## Just the one time so far. Thanks...

Today is day 7 of 1 pill daily, only 100mg. Second attempt trying this drug, don't like it. Can I simply stop? ## Hello, Suzi! How are you? What types of problems are you having with it? The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings and weight changes. After 7 days on such a low dose, you can most likely just stop it, but it would be best to check with your doctor, because stopping abruptly could create the risk of seizures. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you for your reply; i can do it over a few days. To answer your question, just feel kinda "strange" at times, you know? Then again, hate to give up too early. All the negative reviews are scary to me.

Is there a big difference between the 100 mg and 300 mg pills? I’m currently taking 2 100 mg pills 3 xs a day (600 mg total) for a forearm injury but don’t know hos much a difference it makes between these 2 pills. If you have started at the same dose please respond if taking a stronger pill than what I am doing. ## Other than the notable difference in milligrams (potency), each pill is also going to come with a different set of inactive ingredients, otherwise known as binders and fillers. To my understanding, these seemingly inert substances can actually affect bioavailability and even cause some concern for individuals who may be hypersensitive to certain chemicals. Now I'm not saying that your experience will be anything like this, but I do feel that binders and fille...

epilepsy ## Gabapentin was originally developed for the treatment of epilepsy, and is currently widely used to relieve neuropathic pain. For more information about this drug, please refer to the link below... If you have any questions or concerns about this pill, please post back and I will be happy to help you. ## Just started this drug last week and it definitely seems to help with pain/numbness from nerve damage to forehead from auto/pedestrian accident a few years ago, but it's giving me pretty severe lightheadness and dizziness - well my system adjust to this drug? 300mg 3 times daily ## Hi Steve, Gabapentin's most common side effects in adult patients include dizziness, drowsiness, and peripheral edema (swelling of extremities); these mainly occur at higher doses in the el...

Could I be rebounding from Gabapentin withdrawal or fibro pain getting worse? I was prescribed Lyrica because the pain has just gotten worse and worse with Gabapentin, and am now tapering off of Gabapentin. I've been on it 22 months. Was up to 2400 mg last fall, but the first of this year I tapered down to 1800 and have been at 1500 to 1800 a day since. My doctor told me to taper 300 mg every 2 days. I think that is probably too fast. I am now down to 900 (as of last night). My pain is even worse and I wonder if part of the pain is rebound effect. A few days before I saw my doctor my pain suddenly got much worse. But now it is even worse yet. I have gone from taking usual dose of 2 Vicodin 5/500 a day to taking 2 Vicodin at a time to get any relief at all. And still the relief is ab...

Is it ok to drink wine while taking this medication? ## No. Alcohol will only add to the rapid heart beat associated with this drug, and shortness of breath and general feelings of discomfort will follow. Gabapentin is useful in small doses for peripheral neuropathies and certain epilepsies, but side effects abound ~ many of which are life threatening. ## I'm not sure what Jim means by many of them being life threatening. Jim can you please post back with more precise details? As to the problems with alcohol, it's really that it can cause an aggravation of all of the side effects, so you may feel more nausea, dizziness, drowsiness and etc. than you would otherwise. Learn more Gabapentin details here. ## It's not a good idea to mix alcohol with any medication. With gabapentin...

My husband takes 2700 mg a day. Since his dose has been upped that high he has been experiencing severe shaking and tremors. His heart races and his muscles twitch as well. You can visibly see his body shaking. It is a constant state, not something that comes and goes. His doctor has yet to return his phone call. Has this happened to anyone else? ## Those can be side effects, especially at such a high dose, according to the NIH. He may also experience dizziness, nausea, weight gain, mood swings, and delusions. How long has he been taking this dose? Is he on any other medications? Has he heard from his doctor, yet?

My prescription says take 3 capsules by mouth daily as needed for nerve pain. Should I take all three at once or space them out thru the day? This is for peripheral neuropathy due to chemo treatments for cancer in bones & liver. Also should I take vicodin with this medication ## Have you asked your doctor or pharmacist? Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant, that has also been shown to help with nerve pain, however, it is normally given as 3 daily divided doses, but you should check with your doctor or pharmacist to be certain. Side effects may include: nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and weight changes. Learn more:

Can you please tell me if Gabapentin usp 400 mg comes in an unmarked white and purple capsule ## Not in the U.S. All manufactured prescription medications in the U.S. are required to have imprints to enable their identification. The only time a prescription medication would be in an unmarked capsule would be if it were something specially ordered by a doctor and done by a compounding pharmacy and it would make no sense in this case, since this medication is already available in standard doses. That said, they are most likely some type of over the counter product, since they are not required to have imprints and be logged with FDA. Is there anything else I can help with?

Was already on Gabapentin, low dose for Restless Legs when began having Nerve Problems in feet, and increasing unsteady gait. Am not Diabetic, no history of Nerve problems in family Then Neurologist started increasing dose and found myself on 4800mg/day before beginning own research, and found I was taking way more than recommended daily dose. Uncaring Neurologist! Since learning, I have been steadily decreasing dose since Aug/2014. Now on 2000mg/dqy, 800mg in morning and bedtime, 400mg at mid day, about 3:pm but with severe withdrawal symptoms-extreme pain. Have I tried to decrease to rapidly? ## Hello, Donna! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems that you're having. How big was your most recent decrease? Rebound pain can be a normal side effect of decreasing the dosag...

I have been on 300mg gabapentin for 4 years--never more--same dose the whole time. Can I start having withdrawal symptoms if the dosage remains the same? ## Hello, Gizmo! How are you? No, generally you shouldn't experience withdrawal symptoms, but the medication may start to lose effectiveness, so it may not work for you as well as it used to. What types of symptoms are you experiencing? ## I am doing okay. I am 33 months off of 1mg Xanax and 18 days off of 150mg tramadol. Just got worried about gabapentin reaching tolerance. I have been on it 4 years for hot flashes. Take at bedtime only. I am still having many symptoms from drug withdrawal from Xanax and tramadol. I found out that with tramadol and Xanax dosages have to be increased over time. Iwas sure hoping gabapentin was not l...

Hi I have been on Gabapentin for a month. The highest dose I could tolerate is 900mg a day. The problem is the drug has had no effect on my pain. I have tried to go up in dosage to possible get some pain relief, but I am retaining fluid at higher doses and I have Congestive Heart Failure, so this is a no-no. So..... The pain clinic wants to switch me to Topamax. Any experience or comments. Thanks! ## Hi Katia, Unfortunately, there have been quite a few of side effects reported by Topamax users. I have been taking gabapentin for almost 2 months now. My doctor gave it to me for migrain head aches, restless leg syndrome and anxiety. I take 300 mg at bedtime every night. About an hour after I wake up in the morning I'm very sick to my stomach which sometimes lasts all day long. I also can not keep my legs still. I bounce them all day. About 3 hours before I go to bed I get very irritated. Once I take my night dose it all goes away. Could this be from the gabapentin? I do also take sertraline 50 mg every morning for my anxiety. ## Hello, Sharrie! How are you feeling? I'm sorry about the problems you're having. It could actually be due to either medication, they've both been known to cause such side effects, as reported by the FDA. However, the restless legs is more ...

I tapered off gabapentin two weeks ago but still feel stoned and have no get up n go. Lots of gas still as well. Is this normal and how long will it take to be lucid and energetic again? ## How long were you taking it, and how much were you taking each day? Did you taper off of it, or just stop it cold turkey? Those can be withdrawal effects of Gabapentin, according to FDA reports, along with rebound pain, rebound depression, and a risk of seizures if you stop cold turkey from high doses. Are you on any other medications? ## Took it for 2 1/2 months. 1200 mg for 1 1/2 months. 600 mg for two weeks then 300 mg for two weeks. Stopped after that. I'm also on 40 mg of Paxil. ## It took at least a month for me to feel normal after dumping Gabapentin. I weaned off of it slowly & I only...

Hi, I've been on Gabapentin about two years, but recently the Dr. increased the dose to 300 mg three times a day...for anxiety. I have been only trying to take it every other day instead. On the off days, I feel crummy. But if i took it daily, then the eventual withdrawal would be horrendous from what I've read. Besides that, I'd build up a tolerance to it pretty quickly and wouldn't be as effective in a short amount of time. Does anyone else take it every other day instead of daily? ## Gabapentin has a short half life of 5 to 7 hours; that’s why it’s typically prescribed 3 times a day and sometimes 4 times a day. Skipping dosages and taking it every other day can cause interdosage withdrawals when you're late on your dosage or skip a day. Gabapentin is a...
