Cymbalta Weight Gain

Started cymbalta med in late 2006. Initially, I lost about 8 lb and besides some other "bad" side effects, the results to this day are good and 'steady'. However, in the last four years the weight has started to creep up little by little to where I can not (even with modest excessive) get back down to where it was initially in 2006. Also, as I eat properly and very cautiously, the weight now drastically fluctuates from day to day. I believe my age, now 61, along with the 60mg of cymbalta, might demand at least ..now...35 minutes on treadmill three times a week for this initial weight loss to be restored....but I'm a bit lazy recently..... ## Hello, Howard! How are you doing? Sorry about the weight issue. On top of the issue with the weight gain, your recent laziness ...

I was on Celexa for about 2 years, minimal weight gain, Dr switched me to Cymbalta in Oct to address menopausal symptoms. I feel great but have gained 15 pounds since October. I have been watching my diet faithfully, have completely cut out soda, potato chips, sweets - I am existing on cheerios for breakfast, fruit for lunch, and a sensible meal at dinner. I feel bloated and look pregnant. Will this weight go away if I stop cymbalta? This is ridiculous. None of my clothes fit anymore. ## Also I seem to be mixing up numbers and letters sometimes - almost like I've suddenly become dyslexic. And I get brain zaps about mid-afternoon every day. I want to stop cymbalta but I'm really worried about the side effects. But the weight gain and other things I'm going thru make me wonder...

I gained 68 lbs while on Abilify. Now four years later my weight is still 30 lbs over my normal. I still have some depression and very severe anxiety so my doc wants me to try cymbalta 20mg once a day. I would rather be depressed than severely overweight. Anyone know if cymbalta tends to cause weight gain or loss? ## Actually, one of its most common side effects is decreased appetite, so it might actually cause weight loss. Learn more Duloxetine details here. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Hi, I have been on cymbalta for about 4 years now, after a suicide attempt. I started off on one capsule a day which wasn't enough so it was increased to 2 a day. I fell in love with life again. I find it amazing and I can't do without them. HOWEVER! My weight has increased dramati...

I've been on Cymbalta for 3 years for depression and anxiety. I am about 30-40 lbs overweight but I can't seem to loose weight no mater what I do. Has anyone else ran into this problem or no what to do to loose the weight. I take 120 mg per day ## Yes, weight gain, or the inability to lose weight can be a normal side effect of most medications in this class according to NIH reports. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and mood swings. Do you also make sure to get plenty of exercise and to eat as healthy as possible? Are you on any other medications?

My Dr. would like me to switch from Paxil Cr, which I have been taking for 2 years now to Cymbalta because of the the weight gain side effect I'm having with Paxil. He said Cymbalta can have a weight loss effect for some people. I would like to hear comments from anyone that has made this particular switch and/or about weight gain/loss from using Cymbalta. Thanks so much ## I was on Zoloft for several years and developed significant weight gain, I was switched to Cybalta, in hopes that it would help with my chronic pain, as well as my depression and etc. I did start to lose the weight about a week after I started using it. Unfortunately, it did not work for me at all, for either my pain or depression, so I had to go back on the Zoloft, however, I have maintained the weight loss, eve...

I have loss about 30 pounds without trying and have had ALOT of hair loss, it will just drop off my head ! what is that, I have had all kinds of diagnostics, could this be from the 2 meds ??? HELP ! ## Hello, Meana! How are you? Yes, it could be from one or both of the medications, though it would be more typical for weight gain to occur. What type of diet do you normally eat? Has anything else changed, recently? How old are you? Have you consulted your doctor? It might be time to try different medications.

I am finding that it seems like I have gained weight since I have been on Paxil. I need to check this out, but I think I did better on Zoloft. I had been on for several years. Please let me hear from anyone. ## I gained over 50 lbs. takinking Paxil before my Dr. changed me to Cymbalta. I am back to my normal weight of 180 lbs. ## Yes, Paxil is an SSRI antidepressant that is also used to treat some nervous disorders, and anxiety, and it is well known to cause weight gain in people that take it, according to FDA reports. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and mood changes. Ref: Paxil Information Why did you stop the Zoloft if it was working well for you?

I was on Paxil and gained 60 lbs in 6 months. I took it as a migraine preventative and it worked wonders but I was always a normal weight and then suddenly I was FAT! After a few years, I could not stand it and switched to Cymbalta but I stayed fat. I do not know what to do. I changed my diet to no junk food at all and it does not seem to matter. I have tried to get off of it but when I taper off, I have terrible heart palpitations. Help! ## Hello, Mica! How are you? Most antidepressants do cause weight gain in most people that take them. You might want to try asking your doctor about trying Prozac/Fluoxetine. It is also an SSRI, just like the Paxil, but it isn't known to cause weight gain, as a matter of fact, in some people it may cause weight loss. Other side effects may include ...

I am currently taking 600mg Lyrica and 60 mg Cymbalta. 10 mg Tramadol as needed. How long does someone have to stay on Lyrica for FM, DDD, Stenosis, Pain Management (from MVA 30 year old Cervical & Back Injuries). ## There is really no set time that anyone has to stay on it, per se, it's really dependent on how well it works for you and what you and your doctor decide is right and safest for you. Has it been helping your pain? Are you experiencing any problematic side effects? ## Its seems to be working. They got me up to 600mg per day. Weight gain is scaring me as I have always been thin. I do get the electric buzz'es up my neck if you know what I mean. (Like Gabapentin). Will I have to take this for life?

No, Cymbalta is an antidepressant, but it can cause those types of side effects and it may take 4 to 5 weeks for them to improve, as your body gets used to the medication. I have taken Wellington for a couple months now and I am more depressed than ever..I have gained 25 pounds since March... Dr. is giving me Cymbalta to try with the Wellbutrin..I am terrified of gaining more weight. I CANNOT gain anymore..I have been so depressed I don't even leave the house and I am usually an outgoing person...I don't know what to do. ## I meant wellbutrin ## My advice as a Cymbalta user for a couple years is do not take it. It took me 4 months to wean myself off and they were not easy. I have been off almost 3 weeks and am still have some withdrawal symptoms. I quit by skipping my pill on Monday and Thursday for 2 weeks. Then added a third day for 4 weeks. After than I would try to go 2 days without one but if I got too dizzy I would take one. The only antidepressant I ever took for a short time was Zoloft to get me thru PMS. Age 56. I started taking Cymbalta 2 weeks ago and I feel wonderful. I was moody(never knew when it would happen). Sluggish, gain weight. For the short time, I have been moody one time and loose weight. Plus I'm changed my diet to eat healthier and exercising. It boost the serotonin in system. ## All SSRI's are harmful, some fatal while taking/withdrawling. Cymbalta is a dual SSRI (SSNRI). Take 5htp OTC at a health food outlet, no side effects. I've been at 60mg/day since 11/04, and I am pissed. I have diabetic neuropathy, no mental/emotional issues. Save yourself, pharma won't. In short, all SSRI's are FDA approved chemical lobotomies, and your Dr. makes money prescribing them. Good L...

I’m a 72 year old who has been on 60mg Cymbalta plus 300-2400 mg gabapentin as needed for 4 years for neuropathic pain. The combination has been effective in lowering the baseline of my pain. During this time, however, I have gained a great deal of weight. Recently I’ve had aching and sometimes sharp pain near my liver. This is very concerning for me. I have also experienced blunted emotions during my entire time on these meds. Prior to starting this combo, I never experienced any mood disorder problems. Now that my neuropathic pain is under much better control, I decided to get myself off of the Cymbalta. I have been completely off these meds for 2 weeks+. My blunted emotions have been replaced by increased tearfulness, mood swings, increased irritation and mild outbursts o...

Hello! I starting taking Cymbalta just yesterday after gaining almost 20kgs on Lexapro (took it for 18 months) I've read mixed reviews on people gaining more weight on it or losing weight. Today so far (its almost 2pm) I have no appetite whatsoever and have only managed to eat one piece of sourdough toast. On lexapro by this time of day I would have already eaten eggs on toast and be onto making pasta for lunch, I was always so hungry! So I feel pretty confident that I will be losing the Lexapro weight while on Cymbalta. Have you lost weight on Cymbalta? I'd be interested to know others experience. ## Hi Luella, While I haven't personally taken Cymbalta, I did come across reviews from other users who have tried it. And I'm actually surprised by the number of people who c...

I was on cymbalta for 7 to 8 years can't remember that's one of the side effects. Anyway I was put on it for my rage and fibromyalgia. Well it helped my mood tremendously. Someone could say some hateful or sarcastic comment and it wouldn't even bother me one bit. Now the bad, I had severe right side pain. Went to one doctor to another they finally took out my gallbladder. Had severe constipation and weight gain. Also had brain zaps thru the back of my skull. I tried getting off cymbalta several times and failed couldn't handle side effects. I finally got the courage 3 months ago to stop this good/evil drug. I would take one every other day for a week. Then take One every 2 days for a week Until I quit. Now that I'm off I have depression. Rage is back. So it did help ...

I just went from 60 mg to 80mg of cymbalta. I have fibromyalgia, neuropathy and depression and anxiety. Has anyone taken 90 mg and did it help you? ## It didn't help me when I took it, but I am probably not the best judge. I tried it years ago and have since found out I was misdiagnosed and being treated for the wrong thing. It was not going to do anything to help the pain I was having. A higher dose may cause a resurgence of the side effects, such as: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and weight gain. Has it been working for you? ## Hello, I'm looking for help for my mother. Just like you Dolly, she suffers from fibromyalgia and neuropathy. She's having such a hard time with the pain and seems to suffer from restless legs too. I've just tried Cymbalta for 90 days. From the first it greatly helped my diabetic neuropathy in my feet. However after 2 months, I started gaining weight, and having irrational thoughts. I also had a bad taste in my mouth. I tapered off the drug for my own mental well being. I'm looking for another anti-depressant that doesn't have these side effects. ## These are common side effects to this medication, however, not everyone experiences them. This is an SSNRI antidepressant, so you may want to speak to your doctor about just trying an SSRI or perhaps an MAOI. Has your doctor made any suggestions?

Ihave been on cymbalta for 10 years. I tried to taper off but the side effects were like the worse flu I have ever had. I'm am depressed again and feel that it's time for a change. I don't want to increase dosage I want off. I have finally lost the weight I gained over the years on anti depressants and refuse to start gaining again. I'm bipolar so I can be without something. thanks for any help ## Unfortunately, weathering some of the withdrawal effects is likely the only way you're going to be able to stop taking it. Have you consulted your doctor? They may be able to help you set up a better tapering schedule that could minimize withdrawal effects a bit more. ## Hi Inda, I was on Cymbalta for 8 years, it took me 18 months to wean myself off it slowly.
