Can You Use Clindamycin For Tooth Infection

Can i still take clindamycin for my toothache? It expired 3 months ago. Is it safe? ## Hello, Tiffany! How are you? It is never a good idea to take an expired antibiotic. Since medications lose effectiveness over time, it may not completely eradicate the bacteria and could result in your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. It would be best to see your dentist for a new prescription, if an infection is present. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have a really bad toothache that I think is abscessed. Will Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) help treat the infection? ## Can Bactrim be used for a Tooth Infection? While Bactrim is effective against a range of bacterial infections, it is not typically the first-line antibiotic for treating tooth infections, which are often caused by anaerobic bacteria found in the oral cavity. These infections usually respond better to antibiotics that are specifically effective against the types of bacteria found in dental abscesses, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or clindamycin, which are more traditionally prescribed by dentists. However, in cases where a patient cannot tolerate these first-line antibiotics or if the infection is caused by a bacteria that is known to be susceptible to...

I started taking Clindamycin 36 hours ago for a tooth infection. Still in extreme pain and more swelling tonight. When will the Clindamycin start helping my infection? ## If you have been taking it for more than 24 hours and the infection/swelling has worsened, that most likely means it is not working and you may need to try a different antibiotic. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Was this prescribed for you by your doctor, or dentist? Are you on any other medications? ## I have a large gum abcess from a bad tooth and the dentist put me on clindamycin 150 hcl this is my 2nd day of using it and I'm not sure after reading simular post if I should take it more than 2 capsules every 8 hours. I have been to the dentist got sent home with Clindamycin but I also have a sinus infection, asthma and panic attacks. Is this safe for me to take 300 mg 4times a day? And will it work for both infections? ## It is an antibiotic, so it may help with both infections, the best thing you can do is try it and see. However, it generally isn't recommended for people that suffer from asthma. Learn more Clindamycin details here. Thus, I'd suggest you contact your dentist or doctor about an alternative antibiotic. What do you use to treat your asthma? ## I have COPD and my dentist just put me on cindamyacin 300mg 4 times daily for 7 days for an infected wisdom tooth. He was unaware of my breathing problem. I have been on it for 3 days, should I discontinue and contact my primary care doc...

Extreme tooth ache (infection) reoccurring of course. The only option to eliminate the pain and infection is a dentist. Of course I do not have that option right now. I haven't for a long time. Thus reoccurring tooth pain(infection). I have taken Clindamycin in the past for a tooth infection. But right now I only have the Sulfameth-Trimethoprim 800/160mg tabs. From what I have read it is not often prescribed for a tooth infection. But for a bacterial infection yes. So I am giving it a try. If it works I will update you. If it doesn't then it's a trip to the Emergency room for a numbing shot and a prescription for antibiotics that I might or might not be able to pay for. Tooth aches, abscess, or infection. Honest to God worst pain imaginable. That says alot Because I have bee...

I am taking Clindamycin for a wisdom tooth infection. It works great yet I want to forewarn any women who may decide to take it. It gave me a nasty yeast infection. I am talking about swollen lips, itchy, dry, very uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time. It seems most antibiotics help with one thing and cause other problems. Clindamycin breaks up proteins down there and it causes yeast to grow. If your doctor prescribed you this, get yourself some OTC (over the counter) yeast infection treatment when you go and get the meds from the pharmacy. ## That can be a normal side effect of most antibiotics, in both men and women, although of course for men, the yeast infections are usually only oral. If you are prone to getting them from any particular antibiotic, it is always a good idea...

I need to know if my dog can take this pill? I can't afford to get her looked at but this pill sounds like it will help her infection. I just don't know if dogs can take this? Please let me know! ## I have a liquid bottle of clindamycin for my dog. The bottle says it expired May of 2017. Is it safe to still use if I think she may be having a tooth infection? ## My cat has a respiratory infection. What is the dose amount of clindamycin for a 14-pound cat?

Hi there. I have a really bad tooth abscess; my jaw has swelled up. I was prescribed Mylan-Clindamycin 300mg,take 4 times daily. When will I start to see the swelling go down? ## Hello, Jakub! How are you? I'm sorry about the infection. The general rule with antibiotics is that if it's working, you shouldn't see any worsening after taking it for a full 24 hours and you should start to see improvement after a full 3 days of taking it. If there's no change after 3 days, you should consult your doctor. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Jakub! I know it's been a few months since your post, but I'm in BAD shape, with a ...

I used Bactrim; it takes more time to work than clindamycin. It has taken four days for the swelling to go down, but it has gone down and is almost normal now. I have double strength pills and will take them 2x a day for ten days. I also used the clove oil on my gums and that is working very well. They are going from red to pink again. You can buy this a CVS or Walgreens in the toothpaste isle. I also have been taking four advil 2x day for the swelling. ## Hello, KLF! How are you feeling? I'm glad the antibiotic worked for you. How fast it helps really depends on the nature of the bacteria and the severity of the infection. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything e...

I have a tooth infection and started taking clindamycin for it i have to get my teeth extracted in 6days. Will the infection be gone by then so i can have the tooth extracted? ## Hi Debbie, Sorry to hear about your tooth infection. I'm actually in the same boat as you, getting an extraction in the next month or so for an infected wisdom tooth. Most people get them taken out when they're young, but at age 25 I guess it's better late than never Lol. At any rate, most antibiotics such as Clindamycin, are often prescribed for 7-10 days, depending on the severity of the infection. But my guess is that the vast majority of the infection may be eradicated well within the parameters of that time frame, especially closer to the 7th day mark, when many patients are actually finished w...

I had an extraction on an abscess tooth about a week ago. Since I've been on clindamycin I've been sleepy and tired all the time. A little confusion as well, not much, but enough for me to notice. Is it normal for you to feel tired? I feel drowsy all the time since I've been taking it. ## This is a more rare side effect, but yes it does happen. Your body is fighting an infection of sorts. You will be tired. ## Opp is correct, those can be normal side effects of this antibiotic, as reported by the FDA, you may also experience nausea, headache, and diarrhea. It can also be coupled with symptoms of the infection, which will also take awhile to go away. How much longer will you be taking it? Are you on any other medications? Has there been any change? Not all antibiotics work fo...

Does Clindamycin work for an abscessed tooth and when will the pain stop? My tooth hurts so bad and I don't have insurance to cover the cost. I only work part time. ## Hello, Cali! How are you? It may work, if it does, you should notice an improvement after taking it for a full 3 days. However, the issue is that it is not going to correct the underlying problem that caused the infection and it is going to end up returning. So, you still need to have the tooth taken care of by your dentist. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I have a nasty bridge that needs to be removed. One tooth under needs to be extracted. can it be used after discard date ## It does not become dangerous, after the expiration date, but it will lose efficacy, meaning it won't work as well to treat an infection as it did, when it was new. This does create the possibility of developing antibiotic resistance. Therefore, you should see your doctor for a new prescription. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I can't afford a doctor but exp was a year ago. Will they hurt me? Woke up with a tooth abscess and that's y they were given to me in the first place. I ended up going to the ER because the whole side of my face was swollen , and I was in excruciating pain. When I sAw the doctor, he prescribed me (Clindamycin) 300 mg for my tooth infection. Everything was going good on the first day. I had no swelling, in my face anymore and the pain was subsiding. When the second day came around my stomach started to hurt and feel weird. I was tired, less active then usual, So I slept most of the day. Third day! All of a sudden when I woke up In the morning, the side of my face was swollen all over again and here I thought. Oh NO! Hi. My doctor prescribed me a one-month course of clindamycin 150mg for a tooth infection and I took it for 10 days. My pain went away. Is it okay if I stop taking the med or do I have to finish the course? ## Hello, Ling! How are you? You should always finish the full course of treatment, as direct by your doctor, unless they instruct otherwise. Stopping early creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have lung problems and had tuberculosis when I was younger. I am now 66, have COPD and am very chemically sensitive. The dentist put me on clindamycin for an abscessed tooth. A lot of medications shut my lungs down and my oxygen drops. Should I take this medication? ## Is your dentist aware that you have had, and do have, such health issues? Are you on any other medications? The FDA warns that it carries the risk of causing side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. However, overall, it would be far more dangerous to let an infection like this rage out of control, than it is to try the medication. Have you taken it, yet?
