I am cutting the Bactrim in half. I took full dosage two days but I cannot chance a fall so I cut in half. If I have dizziness, I will not finish. I can get natural product for UTIs. I do not take anything but an occasional ibuprophen so my system is clean. I never take prescribed drugs as a rule. ## Yes, this is not a time released medication, so you can safely cut it, however you should only do so under the approval of your doctor. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea, Has there been any change? How are you doing? ## Can I take a half dose of Bactrim to lower my dose because 800mg is too high for me? I've been on macrobid for 3 days (uti) but it's making me sick and does not seem to be wo...

I have a 25-28 lb. Pug. She has an ear infection, and I have no money for the vet. I do have some Bactrim that I had a reaction to, and I am wondering if I can cut it in half to give her? I know we used to use Bactrim ?TMP when I worked in an animal shelter, but that was over 20 years ago, and I don't remember the dosages. Thank you. ## Hi Sherry, Based on my research, the usual initial dose of Bactrim for dogs is listed at 13 milligrams per pound, to be taken twice daily (12 hours apart). So for a 28lb dog, that would bring each dose to 364 milligrams (13 x 28 =364), amounting to a total daily dose of 728 milligrams (364 x 2 =728). However, just to be on the safe side it would probably still be a good idea to also contact your local veterinary office with a simple inquiry regarding...

started taking Bactrim over a week ago due to an acute kidney infection. Began to experience dizziness a day ago, pain behind the ears started on the left side with a bump and then felt pain on the right side the next morning. Body aches as well. Today I woke up with a rash all over my body that itches and almost has like a burning sensation. Can I take Benadryl with Bactrim to help with the rash? ## Yes, you can experience an allergic reaction that late into a course of it. I had it happen to me 9 and a half days in, I had one dose left, but had to see my doctor and stop taking it. The sad thing is that when i got those bumps, which in my case were swollen glands, I went to the ER and the doctor there did not recognize it as an allergic reaction, so I kept taking it for a few more days...

I took half a bactrim 3 hours ago. Can I change to doxycycline now? I have a rash on my hands. My dog was itching yesterday and I gave it an oatmeal bath but i did not wear gloves. I need to go to bed. Also had a b12 inj. which is normal this morning. I take valium at bedtime too. ## Hello, Kat! How are you doing? Has there been any change? Antibiotics will not do anything to help with an allergic rash, you'd need some type of antihistamine or steroid to treat that. Have you consulted your doctor? Usually, a topical steroid would be tried first and the FDA lists their typical side effects as possibly including skin redness, irritation and dryness.

My mouth is so swollen with blisters all inside my mouth.....now it has started to affect my private area as well with same symptoms. I cant eat and it burns all day long. I only took 4 pills when this started. Please help if you can. ## Rhonda, I have exactly the same reaction to this drug. Blisters on the lips, very sore tongue and blisters on genital area. ## Hi Rhonda, what is the dose you are taking and it would be to your benifit to ask your doctor for a different medication or if it were me I would only take half a dose at a time every 4 to 6 hours. ## I am not sure if you are going to get a response, since this post was made in 2007. However, these reactions do happen to some people and in such ins...

can I give my dog Bactrim for what looks like an abscess on her front baby teeth/tooth she is about one and half yrs old and constantly chewing on her ball and other toys. would his be caused by her chewing. just looks like two little bumps on the back of her front baby teeth ## Hi Connie, If you haven't done so already, I would definitely encourage you to get in touch with a veterinarian when it comes to powerful antibiotics of the likes of Bactrim. Hopefully you can take your dog to go see one in person to determine if it is in fact an abscess or not. I've just seen so many negative reports here pertaining to side effects associated with Bactrim in particular that I'm very partial to the idea of it being given to an animal. This isn't to suggest that it's not a via...

I just had jaw surgery and developed staph infection (red blotchey acne like white heads) on my chin. I've had this before and taken Bactrim for it in the past. However I've been prescribed 1 pill twice a day for a week. I'm half way through my prescription and I don't see any improvement. Any suggestions? Will it work eventually? ## Hello, Simone! How are you? Has there been any improvement, yet? The general rule with antibiotics is that if they are working, you shouldn't see any worsening after being on them for a full 24 hours and you should start to see improvement after taking them for a full 3 days. If there is no improvement after that time, then you should consult your doctor. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nau...

About a week and a half ago I came down with a really bad sore throat. Swollen tonsils. White pus on them. Slight, low-grade fever. No coughing. No sinus issues. Some body/joint/muscle aches. Rapid strep (for Type A) came back negative. Mono test was negative. But I was given Z-Pak antibiotic for three days. That helped. Sore throat was almost gone. Then I got hit with a different kind of sore throat. Pain felt different. Then I started getting small "white head" type pimples on my neck and shoulders. I went back to the doctor. Doctor's GUESS was that it's staph. I was in a hot tub about a week ago. So that's why she guessed staph. But no test was actually done to confirm. But rash doesn't itch. It's not painful. I wouldn't even know it was there if I cou...

I have interpharm 800-160 antibiotic. Was wondering what that dosage would be for my 6 year old? My 14 year old took I tablet twice daily so was wondering if I could just cut the tablet in half? ## Hello, Denise! How are you? Has your child's doctor prescribed this for them? Antibiotics shouldn't be used, unless a doctor confirms the presence of a bacterial infection, because improper use creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. Additionally, when an antibiotic is prescribed you need to be sure that you or your child finishes the entire course of treatment to ensure that the bacteria is completely eradicated. Side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. ## I was wondering if there is anything in it that would he...

I am self medicating with these 2 yr.old tablets that were given for my now deceased husband. I am on oxygen full time and for the past week, my breathing has gotten worse and I have pain in my right ear. I decided to cut out all of my herbal pills for eyesight and hair etc. to see if that was the cause. I still have shortness of breath. I figure I might have an infection going on so I am trying the Bactrim to see if that helps. I take a half pill a day of Digoxin - very low dosage. I have only taken one Bactrim, but so far, so good. Does smz/tmp ds 800-160 come in a smaller pill? my 92 year old mom take one tab daily as a preventative because she self caths due to inability to urinate. But she is starting to have trouble getting that pill down. Looking for a smaller pill that will be easier for her to swallow. ## I'm afraid all the ones I've seen are about the same size. However, it is not a time released tablet, so you could just cut or break them in half for her to make them easier to swallow. Thus, she could just swallow two halves, or 3 thirds, whatever size makes it easier for her to swallow. You can learn more Bactrim details here. She also may want to ask her doctor about prescribing something else, or a liquid form, so she could avoid this problem in the future. Is there anything else I can help with?
