I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes on 5 Jan 2017,when my blood glucose was 718, with a HgbA1C of 9. So began my journey on Regular insulin and Lantus, with a drastic change in diet and a script for Metabolic Surgery(the new gold standard for the treatment of diabetics that are morbidly obese) I was switched to metformin which caused major gastric problems, then went to Januvia with glimepiride, then advanced to Jardiance 25mg with glimepiride 4mg twice a day. I have changed my diet and started exercising 3-4 times a week. I have lost 45 lbs and have had to cut the glimepiride out. So presently I am taking the Jardiance daily in the am and my A1C is down to 5.4 and my average blood sugar is in the low 100's. I have had one UTI, and the weight loss as side effects from the Jardiance. S

Is it safe for a non diabetic to take diabetic medicine? ## HI, Malathi! Yes, it's safe as long as your doctor is going to be supervising you regularly. When it's used in such cases, it's due to your doctor suspecting that you may be insulin resistant, thus an antidiabetic medication may help improve your situation and enable you to lose weight. My dad underwent oral surgery and cannot swallow. He is on a liquid diet and on this med. He is diabetic. The medicine is crushed and mixed with variety of food but he is not taking the medicine. It is extremely bitter. What can this powdered form be mixed with so that it helps him? Thanks ## Since this is a time released medication, it is not safe to crush it. That could result in overdose, because he may get too much of the medication, at once. It would be best to consult his doctor as he may need to switch to a regular release medication, for awhile, or possibly insulin.
