Qsymia Phentermine + Topiramate

Phentermine/topiramate, sold under the brand name Qsymia, is a combination drug of phentermine and topiramate used to treat obesity.[1] It is used together with dietary changes and exercise.[2] If less than 3% weight loss is seen after 3 months it is recommended the medication be stopped.[2] The weight loss is modest.[3] Effects on heart related health problems or death is unclear.[2] Common side effects include t...

My wife was on phentermine, and then qsymia. She came off qsymia and is now full of anxiety and anger. Please help. ## Withdrawal effects can be normal, if someone abruptly stops a medication, she may also experience nausea, diarrhea and headache. Why did she stop taking it? These symptoms should go away after a few weeks, once her body gets used to no longer having the medication added. Is she on any other medications?

I believe that Phentermine, and Qsymia are poisons. Sure they help you lose weight but the long-term side effects and trade-offs are not worth the risk. When I originally took Phentermine I lost almost eighty pounds over a two-year period. I continued to take it for almost ten more years in order to maintain my weight until I was finally hospitalized because the Phentermine had debilitated me. I was unable to sleep despite the fact that I was always exhausted and I was plagued with nightmares and unable to sustain long periods of exercise such as tidying up the house or even taking a walk. I was constantly depressed and too weak to really take charge and do anything about it. I was also always constipated and noticed a constant metallic taste in my mouth. Because so many nutrients and p...

Hi all. I am about to start low dose Qsymia but also take Prozac, been on for years. Anyone on both medications and any side effects or concerns? ## Yes, there is a warning about combining them, according to the FDA, taking both has been known to cause Serotonin Syndrome, a potentially fatal condition. If you have been instructed to take them both, your doctor should be monitoring you frequently, and you should know to watch for any possible symptoms of it, such as confusion, twitching muscles, heavy sweating, diarrhea, muscle rigidity, high fever, and seizures. If you experience any of them, you must seek immediate medical attention. Are they both being prescribed by the same doctor?

When does it stop working as well as an appetite suppressant and why does your weight loss slow down? ## Hello, Lauren! How are you? Our bodies eventually get used to any medication that we take regularly for a long period of time, which causes them to stop working as well for us. There's no precise time frame that can be given though, because it can vary from person to person. Regardless of the method used to lose weight, there is almost always a plateau that you hit, at some point. Your body also gets used to whatever you're doing to spur it, such as a medication, or exercise and weight loss can slow down, unless you change something to ramp it back up, such as changing your exercise routine, your diet, or the medication that you're taking. The FDA lists Qysmia's typic...

I've been on Qsymia high dosage for over a year, exercise and watch my diet carefully. I haven't lost weight in fact I've gained 10 pounds. I'm a thyroid cancer survivor taking Synthroid daily and my thyroid blood tests are fine. This is frustrating. I too skip the dosage on weekends. I've been on qsymia for three years now. Maybe I should switch to another brand. ## Weight gain can be a side effect of Synthroid and it isn't likely to change, while you are taking it. The FDA lists its other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and hair loss. Which medication do you skip on the weekends and why do you skip it?

Is there a way, after an extended use of Qsymia to somehow reboot its effects? It worked real well for me in the beginning and I've seen where some have said they skip a dose and also where advise was given that our bodies get used to the meds. So i was wonder if maybe taking a week or two off from using could somehow assist in helping? ## Yes, sometimes it does help to take some time off. How long have you been taking it? The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and mood changes. How much weight have you lost, so far? You can read more about this medication here: ## Thank you for the reply. I’ve been on it for a few years as it’s more for maintenance now. Lost over 150 lbs and need to lose another 40-45. The si...

has anyone taken Qsymia to loss the weight gained by being on Remeron (Mirtazapine)? ## Hello, Basset Gal! How are you? There are two issues here, the first is that it is never a good idea to take another medication to try to treat a side effect that has been caused by a different one. Doing that just tends to compound the side effect problems. And the second issue is that the weight problem will continue, as long you keep taking the Remeron, so you'd just really be trying to fight a losing battle. The best thing to do, if they Remeron has caused you to gain a significant amount of weight would be to speak to your doctor about trying a different medication, such as Prozac, that isn't known to cause weight gain. Side effects to it may include nausea, dizziness, headache and weigh...

Looking for a doctor in Akron Ohio to prescribe qysmia. my family physician said he didn't believe in it ## Qsymia (phentermine + topiramate) is used together with diet and exercise to treat obesity. Any regular MD in your area should be able to prescribe this for you. So it may just be a matter of changing doctors if your current physician doesn't agree with its use. Did you happen to ask him why he didn't believe in it? Perhaps a more straight answer from him would help you make a more informed decision when it comes to considering this medication. All I'm saying is that he must have a good reason to not want to prescribe it for his patients. Topiramate and Phentermine both list some very undesirable side effects, and I can only assume that this may be why he doesn...

I have done very well on the medication. I have had to increase the dosage to the full amount as had been advised by the manufacturer and the FDA and after almost a full year it seems to have stopped working, which happens with most medications like this (and pain meds too). My doctor has suggested weekly "drug" holidays (i.e. I don't take it on the weekends) to stimulate it's efficacy when I resume the next weekday. Also, on those weekdays when I simply forget to take it at the early time of day, I just don't take it at all. However, as I reach the full year period in June, I am looking at loosing the monthly $75 discount. So I wrote the manuf. Vivus and asked if they would extend the discount so that I can safely taper down to get off the medication as is the recom...

I seem to be gaining weight. The first week, I had a hard few days adjusting to it, then I got beyond it and started loosing weight , happy. Now in my 2nd week, I'm gaining weight. The Topamax in the past , alone, made me hungry/tired. Phentermine in the past worked but I was used to 37.5 mgs when it was prescribed back in the 90's. The Qsymia's paltry 3.75 mgs is pretty darn low dosage. It's too early to up the dosage to the next level which is fine by me bc. I'm afraid that when I do, the double dose of the Topamax will double my appitite; 7.5 mgs. of phentermine is still so low I'm surprised it's even prescribed. I guess I'm just a perpetual malcontent, huh. ## Hello, BostonHolly! How are you doing? Has there been any change? Are you also getting lots ...

I am going to a clinic who is prescribing me a combination of phentermine and topamax. Initially I went to them about 2 years ago and this combination allowed me to lose about 30 pounds like magic. The weight just fell off! I went on maintenance and maintained the weight well. I weaned myself off the medication and was increasing my exercise because I was concerned about gaining the weight back. Then I hurt my hip and had to set a lot, plus as a Realtor the market was as such that required me to do a lot of prospecting to get business so I was on the phone and computer a lot...so a lot of sitting. I ended up putting on 10 lbs before I knew it. I gained it so fast! So I went back to my Diet Clinic and the Phentermine and Topamax isn't working now??? What do you think has changed? Do ...

My Dr started me on the 7.5 mg dosage. Is this normal? ## No, the normal starting dose of Qysmia is the lowest, 3.75/23mg for 14 days, then stepping up to the 7.5/46mg dosage. Did you ask them why they prescribed this dosage? Ref: Medscape Qysmia Have you started taking it, yet? The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, GERD, and dry eye.

I read that the makers of Qsymia have an exclusive deal with SAMs Club to provide it at a lower cost for SAMs Plus members. It is supposed to be lower than the discount currently offered through the company. I was wondering did anyone know the cost? ## Hi Masey, I did some investigating on this and found that the wholesale price which pharmacies are paying for Qsymia is around $120-$135 depending on the dosage. With the use of an RX Savings Card, people reportedly pay anywhere from $194-$264. As far as Sam's Club is concerned, I would encourage you to contact them directly in order to receive an accurate answer regarding the cost of Qsymia. However, I would probably anticipate the price range to be somewhere in the ballpark of what it might cost with the use of a savings card. If yo...

I can not afford the 150 after the free trial. Isn't there a drug company application I can fill out for assistance? ## Hi Diane, I'm not aware of the drug company application you speak of. I would suggest that you speak with your local pharmacy about patient assistance programs so that you can afford your medication. Good luck! ## Could you use the money saved from not buying food to cover the cost? ## Cheaper Qysimia! My internist understands the lengths that I have gone to in order to succeed at weight loss, including 5 years on Weight Watchers and a lapband inserted in 2008. All attempts ended in minimal weight loss despite being anal about exercising and logging my portions. I am not an over eater; for me, it comes down to having a shot metabolism, period. Has anyone experienced heavier or prolonged periods? Im 47 not sure if hornonal or if its a side effect. So far Ive had great success with 22lb loss in 5 weeks. Dont want to stop. ## Hello, LadybugJ! How are you? It has been known to cause painful periods, but not prolonged or heavier, from what I'm finding. It could be hormonal, due to your age. Have you had this checked out by your doctor? Other side effects may include palpitations, anorexia, headache and dizziness. ## I'm way late to the party here but I'm finding this. I'm 35. I was on for a month and basically had my period 3 times. Did you ever find anything out? ## Late to the party but I'm 35 with the same issue. Did it stop? Could you do anything to prevent / help it? Thanks.

I was on Qsymia for about 16 months with no side effects. I lost 40 pounds at that time. I took a break for about a year and recently in the last 3 months I gained 18 pounds back. I came back to Qsymia but I had terrible side effects. Headaches, ear noise, dizziness. I have been taking it for six weeks and I only have lost 2 pounds during the first two weeks. Right now, I am not losing or gaining any weight. I still feel a dizzy and a little ear fullness. What do you think has changed? Why Qsymia is not working any more and why do I have side effects that I did not have before? ## Time changes everything, including our reactions to medications, sometimes people even discover that they've suddenly developed an allergy to a medication that they had no problem taking for many years. I am looking for doctors in the Boise idaho area who prescribe qsymia or phentermine ## Hi, Jess! Unfortunately, there is no database of which doctors treat with any given medication. Are there any weigh loss specialists in your area? If so, that would probably be the first places to try as they are better informed and more knowledgeable about such issues and medications.

Hello, I am trying to locate a doctor in the Charleston, SC area that prescribes Qsymia. ## Hello, Gera! How are you? There is no listing of doctors according to what they will or will not prescribe that I can refer to for you. Really, any doctor can prescribe it. Have you talked to your PCP? They may prescribe it, or refer you to someone that will.
