I am getting stomach pain from Norethindrone. Will this go away with time? ## Generally most side effects last about 4 to 5 weeks, as your body gets used to a new medication, and then begin to taper off in severity, before disappearing. However, if the pain is severe, you should consult your doctor as this might not be the right medication for you. Have you been taking it with food, or on an empty stomach? Other side effects may include dizziness, acne, weight changes, bloating, and blurred vision. Ref: Norethindrone Information Are you on any other medications?

Hi, I had been having very heavy menstrual bleeding for the last 2 months (Dec/Jan) so my dr. prescribed me norethindrone 5mg to take the first day of my period and to take it everyday. I also have the paragard copper IUD (which is partly the reason for the heavy bleeding). I got my period on Feb. 1st and started taking the norethindrone that day and I have been bleeding every day since then (now Feb. 16th). It started out light and it has gotten heavier the longer I have been on it. It is to the point where I am heavier now with the medicine than without. I am calling my doctor tomorrow but he has been out of the office for the last 4 days. Has anyone else had this problem? Should I just stop taking it? What happens if I stop taking it? I started getting night sweats the first day I to...

Does anyone have more information about these birth control pills? ## I've been having a lot of problems this last month or so. Joint and muscle pain, fatigue, heart palpitations, nausea, wearing a heart monitor now and having some extra blood work done but the nurse suggested I check into my birth control to see if this could be causing the problems. This week has been so bad I barely have been able to get out of bed. Anyone else have similar symptoms? ## How long have you been taking it? The hormones it adds to help prevent pregnancy can cause issues for some women, and of course, it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, mood changes, weight changes, and irregular vaginal bleeding. I had very heavy periods with alot of cramping so my doctor suggested Cryoablation. Before I did that I had to have a cyst and fibroid removed. He then put me on a 5mg Norethindrone once a day originally for 4 months after the Cryoablation. At my 3 month checkup I still hadn't had a regular period so he told me to stop taking it. It's been a week since I stopped and still no period but terrible headaches daily, some cramping and alot of nausea. I cannot be pregnant so I'm not worried about that but wondering if the side effects are normal and how long I can expect them. ## Hello, Tonya! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems that you're having. Some women no longer have periods, or have extremely light ones, after having cryoablation done. I'm surprised t...

I have been on norethindrone for 5 years from abnormal menstrual bleeding. My doctor told me I could stop taking it at any time to see if I have gone through menopause yet. Both times I tried, my body aches so severely I can barely lay down or even put clothes on without wincing. Is this common? Why would this happen? Any suggestions of how I can stop taking it and avoid this agony? ## Hi Michelle, Sorry to hear about your situation. Based on your story, it sounds like there may be withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping Norethindrone... In such cases, perhaps it would be best to consult your doctor about a tapering regimen in order to help mitigate these unwanted side effects while you slowly titrate off the medication. After 5 years of use, it's likely that your body has beco...

I was put on norethindrone when I was approx. 45 (11 years ago) to stop extremely heavy periods, in an attempt to avoid a hysterectomy. The drug worked well...I haven't had a period in the last 11 years. Problem is my endometrial lining has increased (I was evaluated - no problem) so a good suggestion was made to stop taking the norethindrone. I may be in menopause but diagnostics can't tell because the drug masks what's going on. I've been off norethindrone for a week today. No bleeding, cramps or anything. Just wonder if anyone else has been through this before. It's hard to find any data on the internet and the doctors don't really seem to understand effects from long term use. Thanks for any info that can be provided. ## Anytime you use hormones, such as this...

I currently take 5 mg of norethindrone for ten days before my period. This is my fourth month taking it. Although I have seen some difference in my period I haven't had the result I was hoping for. I was put on this for heavy periods. Does this medicine sometimes take longer to see a result in some people or am I just unlucky. ## Hi Lana, Usually it takes a few months for any birth control to work full force. You have been taking it for 4 months which is quite a while, so you should be seeing results by now. Everyone's body is different though so it could just be taking longer for you. If you want, you can give it another month or two, but if nothing changes I'd speak with your gynecologist about trying something different. I hope this advice helps!
