Mirena Levonorgestrel

Levonorgestrel is a hormonal medication which is used in a number of birth control methods.[5] It is combined with an estrogen to make combination birth control pills.[6] As an emergency birth control, sold under the brand name Plan B among others, it is useful within 72 hours. This should not be confused with EllaOne which can be effective within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected sex.[5] The more time that has passed since sex, the less effecti...

i have had a mirena in for 5 years and now it has to be removed i am 54 years old a bit scared having this done as when i had it put in it was in hospital. do you think i will get any more periods after it has been removed? ## Hello, Karen! How are you? No one can really say for sure, it depends on whether or not your post menopausal. Even if you are, there is still a chance that you may have one more period, just due to the hormonal change of having it removed and possible prior build up of the uterine lining. You may also experience drowsiness, dizziness and weight changes, since having it removed, as listed by the FDA. Does anyone have experience with this scenario?

I have been gaining weight and I have an IUD MIRENA in me and I don't know what to do. Is there any possible way for me to not gain weight???? #PLEASEHELPME ## Hello, Monica! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. No, but generally hormonal contraceptives only cause a gain of about 10 pounds. The only thing you can really do is eat a healthy, balanced diet and make sure that you get lots of proper exercise. How much have you gained? Other side effects may include nausea, headache, acne, irritability, PMS-like symptoms and breakthrough bleeding.

I got the mirena put in 2 weeks ago and have been bleeding heavy since. Today my doctor put me on primolut n. I just wanted to know what is actually going to do? Will it stop my bleeding ? ## Hello, Tam! How are you? That is pretty common with the Mirena, though not everyone experiences heavy bleeding. But hopefully yes, the doctor has prescribed that to try to help balance your hormones back out, so the bleeding stops. The typical side effects of the Primolut N may include nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability and PMS-like symptoms. The only way to see if it will help is by actually trying it. If the bleeding doesn't stop, you'll need to return to your doctor. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Hi, I got the mirena IUD inserted last week and i am currently still ble...

can you use purbac antibiotics while using mirena contraceptive? ## Purbac contains the active ingredients Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim, it is an antibiotic used to treat many types of infections. Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, skin rash and diarrhea. Learn more: And no, since Mirena is an IUD, the hormones it releases are never in your digestive tract, as would happen with birth control tablets, so the antibiotic will not have an effect on it. Are there any other questions or comments?

currently i am taking fragmin for double PE. thursday i am to get mirena. friday i am to start xarelto. anyone have any advice? any better options out there? ## Hello, Michelle! How are you? This seems to be the preferred way to do it, the Mirena with a blood thinner, to prevent pregnancy and the possible dangers to having been on a blood thinner and having a miscarriage or giving birth. However, the Mirena has been known to cause irregular menstrual bleeding, which might be heavier while taking the Xarelto, so you do need to keep an eye on that and seek medical attention, if it gets very heavy. Side effects to Xarelto may include nausea, dizziness, muscle aches and easy bruising. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have had Mirena for a little over 7 years. I know I need to get it removed but that is not possible for me right now. Lately. I have been experiencing strange periods. They are bright red one day, practically black the next. I will have two or three days that go from heavy to light and then disappear. Two days later, it starts all over again. I thought this might be normal at first, especially since I didn't have a cycle for almost three years before getting Mirena inserted. However, this has been going on for two to three months. I also have cramping in the lower abdominal area that does not coincide with the bleeding. Intercourse is also painful at times and I have experienced cramping and bleeding afterwards. I considered menopause but I am only 31. I also know I am not pregnan...

has anyone had one for more than 5 years? I have had mine for 6 years. I still have no period but this month I started cramping... I know that it says it's not effective after 5 years but I figured if I was not having a period then it must be working... ## I had Mirena coil for six years. Agree with your reasoning about how it must still be effective if still not bleeding (unless you're now menopausal?), but, I believe in the wisdom of the body so if suddenly you're cramping, and it's meant to be replaced after 5 yrs, I'd just get it done. I had began to spot-stain tiny bit; also premenstrual aches last 3 mónths. It was not uncomfortable to have it removed, and I had a new one put in straight away. ## Just to add some information for anyone else reading this... ...

Last month I got inserted levonorgestrel Mirena to resolve the prolonged bleeding issue ( last 2 years) and still with bleeding problem. Bleeding continues for 11 days. Loette is suggested for three months. to reduce the bleeding Pause MF given but the bleeding issue not yet resolved. Please suggest. ## Hello, Kavitha! How are you doing? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. Unfortunately, the Mirena IUD doesn't resolve bleeding issues for everyone that tries it, as a matter of fact, it can cause irregular or prolonged bleeding in some women. So yes, you may be better of with oral contraceptive tablets, since they usually contain both estrogens and progesterone and can better balance your hormones. Is there anything else I can help with?

How common is it for periods to be regular past the first year and then stop or space further out? I would have been expecting it around the one year mark... Slightly nervous about pregnancy. I bled for 8 weeks after the insertion of my IUD in April 2012. Then I have had pretty regular periods (within a week) since then. They last between 7-10 days. I think I might be overdue (maybe a week). However I am really bad at tracking it. I felt a really sharp pain a few days ago and yesterday felt cramping. I thought for SURE my period would start by today. The cramping felt exactly like period cramps. Yet, today the cramps are gone and still no period. ## Well, the one predictable thing about the Mirena IUD is its unpredictability. If you made it through a year and a half with regular periods...

Now started.primolut n.for the last 3 days. When bleeding will stop ## Irregular bleeding can be a normal side effect of Mirena, as reported by the FDA, you may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache and PMS-like symptoms. The Primolut N might stop the bleeding, but the only way to know is to take it and see if it works for you. How long has your doctor told you take it?

I am taking Cymgen 60 and having the Mirena birth control inserted, but I am uncertain now as I have read about a few bad side effects of it together with depression. I need clarity on this as I can opt for the Nova -T instead ## Hello, Mariska! How are you? Yes, the Mirena uses a hormone to prevent pregnancy, so it can cause some mood swings and irritability, as listed by the FDA. Other side effects may include nausea, headache and spotting. Is there anything else I can help with?

Am wondering after 10 yrs we no cycle if it will b possible to get pregnant after remove. Havent had any kind of bleeding at all in the 10 yrs ## Hello, Susie! How are you? No, it shouldn't have had any permanent effect on your fertility, but it may take a few month for your body to balance your hormones back out on its own, so you can get pregnant. Once it's removed you may experience hormonal symptoms, such as headache, bloating, PMS, acne and irregular bleeding. Is there anything else I can help with?

I'm looking for doctors in the Tampa Bay area that will order and bill for the Mirena IUD. Any reccommendations will be greatly appreciated. ## Did you ever find someone? Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing what IUD, if any, that any doctor will prefer, nor how they handle insurance coverage.

I had the mirena inserted in early February and bled heavily for the first 3 weeks. That has slowed down to a very slight spotting and not really bothersome. But now I'm dealing with this horrible metallic smell. Its so strong I can smell it all throughout the day. I'm taking multiple showers a day. I saw my doctor 10 days ago and mentioned the smell. She said it was just the blood and to douche. Well I have douched 3 times and there is no change in the smell. I've been reading lots of forums and find I'm not alone. I was thinking of trying the rephfresh...... Thoughts on this? My real concern is this, and i have not ben able to find anything on this: I'm wondering if my doctor gave me an infection when she inserted it..... During the procedure, she was havibg troubl...

Hi all, I had mirena inserted 6 weeks after my daughter was born so July of '09 I had it in for 3 years and thought all was well. I am 24 years old and already have 3 children so in other words very fertile.Anyways I would have occasional bleeding that never felt like a real period until the third year when it stopped completely. Shortly after I started having severe cramps, fatigue, worse depression, loss of libido, fogginess, an extreme hair loss. Once the cramps started to feel like I was in labor I started to look into it. I knew it was the mirena so had it removed right away. I started bleeding very lightly 2 weeks later for only a few days, then about 6 weeks later I bled like crazy! And have had horrible cramps. I always had very light short periods before mirena and never ha...

I currently have an IUD, Mirena, I was just prescribed, Dicloxacillin. I am wondering what are the side effects for these two mixed medications. Does the Dicloxacillin interfere with the IUD? ## In most cases, the reason that antibiotics alter the efficacy of contraceptives is due to their effect on how fast your body absorbs and processes the oral forms. Basically, they can make them run through your digestive system much faster, so less is absorbed and active in the body, which increases your risk of becoming pregnant. Thus, most aren't known to do that with an IUD, since you aren't swallowing and digesting the hormone, instead its being absorbed right into your uterus. However, for added peace of mind, I'd still suggest using a backup method of contraception, just to be o...

I was on the Mirena for 2 1/2 years, I recently had it taken out on June 26, which is on a Thursday. I didn't bleed Friday but Saturday and Sunday and Monday morning I bleed. I did start taking the Lo Loestrin Fe on that Sunday. I have two brown pills left to take and is te feat back and first time I have taken BCP and was wondering how soon can I get pregnant? I am still waiting on my period so I could see when I start ovulating. I have a calendar to keep track of my period. The last time I had my period was June 16th and lasted for 6 days. I should have had my period on the 18th of July but since I started taking BCP I knew that it might have changed a little. So I am a little confused because of the period and the Mirena an pills. So the question is is it possible to get pregnant...

One week later on my follow-up appt the Gynocologist said that I should've stop taking Primolut -N, I told him that I wasn't told to stop. There was still no change in Nov & my mood swings were getting worse. Dec I had another follow-up appt & a different Gyno saw me.I told him that I'm a nervous wreak & very angry, whats going on? he just kept saying `give it time, it will settle '(refering to the Mirena).
