Doxepin is a medication used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, chronic hives, and trouble sleeping.[8][9] For hives it is a less preferred alternative to antihistamines.[8] It has a mild to moderate benefit for sleeping problems.[10] It is used as a cream for itchiness due to atopic dermatitis or lichen simplex chronicus.[11] Common side effects include sleepiness, dry mouth, constipation, nau...

My son died of an overdose. It all started with Xanax. The problem is, eventually one is not enough. My son wanted to sleep, now his sleep is forever & my broken heart will never heal. Its not a thrill game, once you are hooked you are on the threshold of death. I will never see him marry or father a child, or engage in the sports he loved so much. Life can be great if you look at it through sober eyes. Listen to the instructions not to mix alcohol & pills, the combo is lethal. ## Devistated, I am so sorry to hear about your son. My only brother died from an alcohol overdose and my only sister from a drug overdose. When my sister died I developed a severe case of PTSD. This was over 16 years ago and I have had to take a benzodiazepine every day ever since. At first I was on a lo...

Will it hurt me if I take the drug doxepin out of its capsule, divide in half? The lowest dose my ins co has is 10mg. Dr had ordered 3 mg as I'm 68 and also don't process drugs well. ## Hello, Diana! How are you? It's very hard to get appropriate dosing, by doing that. Have you consulted your doctor? There are others they can prescribed instead, that come in lower dosages that may work better for you. For example, Prozac/Fluoxetine is available in 5mg tablets, which you could break in half for 2.5mg doses. The FDA classifies it as an SSRI and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and anxiety. ## I was on doxepin for 8 years and took myself off for one year. Took 100mg at bedtime for small fiber neuropathy. I need to get back on ...

I read that not many people use doxepin...I have roaming body pain after a few hours of sleep...Because of an ele., burn of 13,800 volts back in 1991...I have tried to slowly get off the pill...but with in 2 or 3 weeks my night time pain is with me all night...Dose any of you use this pill for the same reason...pain...I have used as high as 150 mg ... but have been on 75mg for 10 years now... ## Doxepin is typically a sleep aid, I have been on as high a dose as 300 mg a day. Pain is better controlled by gabapentin or some of the newer drugs like lyrica or cymbalta. I know about pain as I have fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel, a screwed up knee and nueroma in my feet. You seriously need to speak with your doctor or a pharmacist. Pain can be overcome with the right meds.

Please let me know if you take doxepin tricyclic antidepressant. If so how much do you take and how long does it take to work? Please respond. ## Hello, Theresa! How are things? Like other medications in this class, it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to reach its full level of effectiveness. Its common side effects may include nausea, dizziness, hypotension and erectile dysfunction. ## Theresa, Hi, I take 100mgs a night, takes about 1 hour to really get sleepy. is doxepin as good or any better than elival or is remeron a good medication for depressoin? ## Medication effectiveness can vary from person to person. What works well for someone else may not work as well for you and vice-versa. The same is true of possible side effects, a drug that might not cause any in your friend, may cause severe problems, when you take it. Therefore, the only real way to know what works best for you is to try a medication. Both Doxepin and Elavil are tricyclic antidepressants and can cause side effects, such as: nausea, fatigue, difficulty urinating and weight gain. More details: Remeron contains the active ingredient Mirtazapine and it is a tetracyclic antidepressant, so it's in a different class. Its side effects can include: nausea, increased appetite, ...

I've been on ms contin (morphine er 30 mg) 3 x daily. I was also taking doxepin 100 mg for sleep. Ended up with a massive headache & eye pain. Ended up in the e.r. where a nurse said the doxepin cancels out the morphine. Anyone know about this? ## No, I can't find anything on this, either. Similarly to your other question, this is another case where taking them together causes potentiation of the side effects, though. Thus, you could experience more intense nausea, dizziness and drowsiness than usual, as reported by the FDA. The Morphine itself can sometimes cause headaches in some people that take it, so can the Doxepin, so that may also have been potentiated and resulted in the severe headache/eye pain that you experienced, which sounds like it may have been a migraine. It...

I started Doxepin about 3 weeks ago to help me sleep. I went to the doctor because I was dizzy. Thought it was vertigo but it was a sinus infection. The dizziness should be gone by now. The only change in meds is the Doxepin. How long does it take to get it out of my system? ## Hello, Laura! How are you? I am sorry about the problem you're experiencing. Doxepin can cause dizziness as a side effect, as reported by the FDA, you may also experience nausea, headache, dry mouth, and weight changes. Generally, they are transient and should go away, once your body gets used to the medication, but that may take about 4 to 5 weeks. Were you also on an antibiotic for the infection? Most of them can also cause dizziness as a side effect.

Im finding my prescription of 1 10mg of doxepin a day too strong, can I divide it up and take it 2 times a day without the capsule? ## Hello, Janet! How are you? When you say you're finding it too strong, what exactly are you experiencing? It is normal for any new medication to cause some side effects for the first 4 to 6 weeks that you take it. This is a tricyclic antidepressant and its common side effects may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and weight changes. Learn more Doxepin details here. I was on Doxepin for a year and worked my way down to 10 mgs doctor said I could go down to10 mgs and now I am taking it every other day. What is the best wsy to come off or could I just stop it like the doctor said I could? Would like to stop if now, great drug for depression but the weight gain is really bad. ## Hello, Tweety bird! How are you? You could try just stopping, as your doctor said, or if you prefer not to, you could start skipping more days, between doses. It's really up to you, but 10mgs is a very low dose. Have you tried anything else for depression? Prozac is known to work wonderfully, without causing the weight gain. Its other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache and muscle aches. ## Thank you for your reply. I have gone down to every other day 10 m...

I had severe hives (urticaria) and monsteresque face swelling (angiodema). Nothing helped. I tried 6 doctors. The seventh put me on 10 mg of Doxepin. Cured! I work hard on keeping the weight off. Have gained some on this drug but what is the alternative? ## Hello, Darla! How are you? That can be a side effect of this medication, as reported by the FDA, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings, and dry mouth. As to your other options, that depends on what else you've tried? Can you please post back with more details? ## Basically I have only tried Zyrtec. Every doctor prescribed it. The bottle says one every 24 hours if I remember correctly. But docs told me up to 7 per day and some said unlimited. Yet it didn't touch my hives/angeodema. Have gained 20 pound. Essential...

I have been taking Doxepin for about a year and I have the side effect of puffy cheeks. How long does it take for the weight gain and puffy cheeks to disappear? ## Hello, Mary! How are you doing? Has there been any change? The weight gain can be a typical side effect and, while it can last the duration of the time you're taking the medication, it usually levels off after a few months, as in it should hit a peak and then stop, you may not lose what you've gained, but shouldn't keep gaining more, according to FDA reports. How much have you gained? As to the puffy cheeks, that is not a reported side effect, though it could be related to the weight gain. Have you consulted your physician? ## Yes I have been off of the Doxepin for over a month. I haven't lost much weight, but...

I found a capsule in my mums room, its red and blue no imprints just wanting to know what it can do to a thirteen year old if she took one of them? Please help fast. ## How do you know it's Doxepin, if it has no imprints? And most medications aren't going to hurt a 13 years if they only took one, unless they're allergic to it or take a lot of it. Did you take it, is that what you're saying? ## No I mean I found it in my mums room, in the box of captules. She was about to overdose on them, until I stopped her. They have no imprints on the captule. No I didnt take it either, thy had a white powder inside them, red one side and blue on the other side. It had Doxepin labled on the front of it.
