Does anyone know of cough syrup with codeine and guaifenesin (like Cheratussin ac) that is either dye-free or does not have red dye #40? My father has an allergy to red dye #40... Thanks! ## What I'd suggest doing is going to a compounding pharmacy. They are specially prepared to handle such problems and mix up the needed medications in the dosages ordered, or without certain ingredients that someone may be allergic to. They may require confirmation of the allergy from his doctor and it is usually more expensive, but would be well worth it to avoid an allergic reaction. Learn more Guaifenesin details here and you can learn more Codeine details here. Since this does contain Codeine, it has the potential to be habit forming and it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry...

Does it have an expectorant in it ## Hi Jim, Neither medication is actually in the drug class of expectorants like guaifenesin. However I have seen other brand names of promethazine + codeine (such as "Phenergan Expectorant/Codeine" manufactured by Wyeth) being marketed as an expectorant. So I'm led to believe that promethazine does exhibit such effects regardless of its classification. Hope this helps!

"During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression" Due to this interaction, I would recommend discussing the safety of taking Methocarbamol + Codeine with your doctor. I take Xarelto for AFIB ...I have a cold with a bad cough. Can I take iophen-C-NR for my cough? ## Hello, Don! How are you? Iophen-C NR contains Codeine and Guaifenesin, so no, you shouldn't take it without your doctor's approval. The Guaifenesin can sometimes affect your heart rhythm and may be dangerous for those with a pre-existing heart condition. This medication also carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with? There are some products available that are made for those with hypertension or cardiac issues, such as Coricidin HBP, so you may want to ask your doctor about taking it for your cold symptoms.
