A friend of mine is giving chloral hydrate to her 8 month old child because of insomnia and apparant night terrors. It is my understanding that this is a very dangerous sedative and should not be given to children without RN supervision. Is this true?? ## Well the monograph does list a certain dose as safe for use in children, however, it is virtually impossible to say that an 8 month is having night terrors and you should NEVER give any prescription drug to a child without doctor's approval and monitoring. This is a very dangerous drug and giving it to a child that young, who is still developing could cause disastrous effects. Not to mention the fact that if this was prescribed for her, or someone else and not the child, then what she is doing is illegal and could be considered chi...

The name chloral hydrate indicates this is a hydrate, but the systematic chemical name indicates it is not, but that it is a diol. However, it is not usual for an organic compound to have 2 hydroxyl groups on the same carbon atom without splitting out water. What is the correct situation here?

How much alcohol is in chloral hydrate mixture 1g (1000mg) / 10ml? I am currently taking Antabuse for a drinking problem I had - obviously, I'm reluctant to take it if there is anymore than a minimal amount in it. ## I use to take Chloral Hydrate but they don't get it anymore where I live in Michigan and that really helped me! Our local hospital has it but won't sell it even with a prescription and I wonder if anybody knows where I can get it? They said it's only used for patients in the hospital which to me doesn't make any sense! I don't know why they won't fill it with my prescription.

I used to be prescribed Chloral Hydrate for sleep which helped, but I now get generic Lunesta, which doesn't really help, cuz I heard C.L.is discontinued. What's the closet to CL. Sleeping pill that I can get prescribed instead? ## Hello, AzunCuties! How are you? I'm very sorry that the Lunesta isn't working for you. You may want to speak to your doctor about trying Triazolam, it is a benzodiazepine that's most commonly used to treat insomnia. It carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability. Does anyone else have any suggestions? ## Thank u for your fast response! I'm very impressed. I honestly didn't really expect a answer back, especially so soon. So thanks again for helping to pu...

To help you sleep or relax ## Did you mean Chloral Hydrate? It had limited use as a sedative and hypnotic. It is not commonly used, anymore, but it once was a popular medication to use. The FDA warns that it did carry the risk of being habit forming, and may cause nausea, dizziness, headache, and drowsiness, as side effects. Are there any questions?

PURPLE ## Based on the description provided, I found your pill to be Somnote (500 mg); a generic for Chloral Hydrate. Chloral hydrate is a starting point for the synthesis of more complex chemicals. It is the starting material for the production of chloral, which is produced by the distillation of a mixture of chloral hydrate and sulfuric acid, which serves as the desiccant. You can view a detailed description of the drug, by clicking on the link below... If you have any more questions or comments to add, please post back so I can further assist you.

I've been so strung out on Gabapentin and Flexaril, which severely affect your sleep. I found a little something which is a blessing. Chloral Hydrate. It comes from China. This drug will get you to sleep fast and you'll stay asleep. Just 2-3 grams a night and you're out like a light. I was able to get off Gabapentin and Flexeril, both drugs that ruin your sleep. The crystals dissolve in water. There is no hangover. It tastes like s*** but I just chase with water. Do not abuse this drug or you'll be sorry. ## Hi Tedster, Sorry to hear about your challenges with sleep. Chloral Hydrate is actually something I've never heard of up till this point, so I want to thank you for mentioning it! Upon researching Chloral Hydrate I also noticed that the US National Library of Med...
