If a patent is taking calcium is there a need to take caltrate? ## Hello, Lou! How are you? It depends on the amount of calcium they need and if they also need Vitamin D, since Caltrate contains both. If someone is low in calcium, their doctor may want them to take extra, or may want them to take something with vitamin D, since it is also very important to our body and our use of calcium. Occasionally, taking a lot may cause some constipation, as listed by the FDA and it could be dangerous to take more than what they doctor has advised. Is there anything else I can help with?
