Sorbitol (/srbtl/), less commonly known as glucitol (/lustl/), is a sugar alcohol with a sweet taste which the human body metabolizes slowly. It can be obtained by reduction of glucose, which changes the aldehyde group to a hydroxyl group. My husband has been taking niquitin gum, about twelve daily and has been suffering frequent loose bowel movements. But in people that chew a lot of sugar free gum that contains it, sorbitol has been known to cause severe diarrhea with rapid weight loss.
