Why Patches When Oxycodone Was Working

Updated

I'm on the fentanyl 50 transdermal gel patch and am not sure why they have chosen to put me on it so quickly. Can anyone shed some light for me on this subject? My PCP had me on a sript of 120mg oxycodone..skipped lortab.. anyway I was only having to take about 90mg of that oxy to maintain my pain from bulging disks and herniated disk in my neck. I had been self medicating for the pain since I had no insurance and finally got some. The docs are at odds that I may also have fibromialgia. Regardless, it was working pretty well and a pain mngmt doc came to the clinic and had a 1 time assesment of all patient with chronic pain issues and said I should be on the 25mg patch ...didn't work. Went to 50 patch and was fine for about 2.5 months and no, again, not working. Why can't I just be on what was working just fine cause sometime I have night terrors from PTSD and it causes the patch to dump a lot at once. So much so that I could hardly breathe when my husband woke me up finally and I actually was dizzy and felt 'high'. Did NOT like it. It scared me and thought I could very well have stayed asleep and died that night. I'm starting to think my doctor just sucks. They refuse to even discuss my pain meds because they entered into the wrong agreement with this assesment doc and now I'm left hanging until I get to a reg. Pain mgmt doc which is taking forever. Any ideas?

Many pain management doctors prefer the patch, because it is over 80 times stronger than Morphine and it is much harder for someone to abuse it.

They were probably just assuming that it would work well for you and many doctors are not actually aware of all the possible problems and side effects that can arise from what they prescribe.

Yes, it can be very dangerous if you have a condition, such as your PTSD, that can cause you to overheat, because the heat causes these patches to release the medication faster.

The only thing I can really suggest is trying to see a different doctor. I really wish I had more suggestions for you.

Does anyone else possibly have any advice to add?

@ Verwon...its crazy..so when your body heat rises it causes the meds to absorb quickly?i didn't know it was 80%. I really think this could work for me im having trouble keeping it on

I think the DEA checks the doctor's records and they have to be in order so the doc doesn't get in trouble. I know my pain doc has to start with the lowest dose of new med when he changes it and can raise it next visit.
This may not be what is happening in your case, but i would sure be asking the doctor when I see him again. No reason for you to be in that much pain!

Since I don't know your total medical history, and to be fair to the doctor, he/she may have felt it was in your best interest to move to Fentanyl patch- something you cannot do unless you have been on opioids (oxycodone) in pill from for a long time. Both are opioids but Fentanyl is much stronger and hits your blood stream much quicker via the trans dermal patch and has less impact to your liver, kidneys. I would strongly recommend asking your PCP for a recommendation to a pain management doctor. They are better equipped to help you with your long-term pain management and find the right fit for your situation. I would also recommend that you educate yourself on opioids, the history of use, the pros and very serious cons, and what DEA and the so called "War on Drugs" is currently doing to stem opioid abuse. Finally know your rights as a patient and use them.
