Triamterene Hctz Use

Updated

Hey there. I just started doing my parents medications. I have my Dad's straight, but am still working on Moms. Mom takes Lisinoprel, primarine, and has a bottle of triamterene hctz. Can't figure out why she was put on this. ( it's Friday, no talking to Doc til Monday). I missed one Dr. Apps with her and gets prescribed !! Any suggestions? Also has an empty bottle of her Nameda xr. I have no idea how long the bottle has been empty. Mom has moderate alzeimers.

Hello, Tracey! How are you? I can imagine that must be somewhat confusing for you, so I'm happy to help.

Triamterene HCTZ is also used to treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. The FDA classifies Triamterene and Hydrochlorothiazide as being diuretics, they help remove excess fluid from the body. Typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, hypotension and dehydration.

Namenda is used to help slow the progression of Alzheimer's symptoms, her doctor may have taken her off of it, it would be best to check, before refilling it. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, hypertension, headache and constipation.

Thus, if it was worsening her blood pressure, they may not want her to continue taking it.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Thank you for your reply. Yes, medications are confusing! ! I had no idea Mom had stopped taking her Namenda, and her cognitive thinking had declined. I spoke to her Dr and he said to refill her Namenda (although she doesn't think she needs it) I stopped giving her the triamterene. She doesn't need a water pill. I am not "playing Doctor" by any means, but with her being on the same mess for so many years.. lisinopril, and premarin, and now back on her Namenda, it isn't needed. Her physical health is great for her age. She is 71. It's her memory that has sadly declined. Thank you for the reply. I really do appreciate it.
