Topomax Changes Brain

Updated

hi
im not taking topomax but my wife recently started taking it for migraine. 3 weeks in she has decided to leave me after 10 years together and 2 kids. She has different reasons for every time we talk. I don't know her anymore and this all started when she started taking the drug. could my suspicion that topomax has altered her mind. its like she has no emotion anymore. I don't want her to leave. she is saying she loves me but not in love with me. this is not a broken love story but im concerned about maybe this drug is altering her thoughts.
has this happened to any other users of topomax?

I hope things have gotten better with your wife! I took Topamax for about 6 months and can definitely say that it changes the brain drastically and could really be the cause of her snapping like that. Again, hope things have gotten better!

I hope you have been able to talk with your wife's doctor about this. Our daughter (38 yrs old) took Topamax after surgery for a massive brain tumor. It is hard for us to say if her personality change was due to the topamax or her brain tumor but there was a definite change in her.....emotionless, irrational thinking etc.,etc. I think it would be wise and prudent to have her go off the Topamax and see if there is any change. I don't know how long that would take but I hope you can convince her to try that before she makes any decisions that will effect her life. So sorry for your situation.

I am so sorry to hear about your wife but I'm not surprised being that she's taking topomax. My MIL took it for a while and it did awful things for her mental state. Please please talk to her dr about changing her med. maybe your wife would consider changing the meds before going through with the divorce. It's so sad to know a family could be ended over this med. but I believe it could whole heartedly based off of the time my mil took it.

When i got a new psych doc he immediately changed my meds. put me on topamax and something else. the topamax was disastrous. it made me cry a lot, the longer i was on it, i felt like i was literally losing my mind. i was even going to admit myself in the hospital. i will NEVER take it again. i just quite it cold turkey(i know that's a no no) but i couldn't handle it anymore. don't know if this helps but this is a drug i will never go on again, he gave it to me for bipolar/manic depressive.
