Tolerance To Oxycotin

Updated

I have been taking 20 mg oxycontin 2 x per day and 20 mg oxycodone 4 x per day for chronic migraines for the last 2 years and before that we tried norco's and butran's patches but the oxy works the best. Lately it seems that the oxycotin is not lasting the 12 hrs it should and I feel myself going through withdrawal about 8-9 hours after taking one oxycotin even with the oxycodone. Does my tolerance with these medications be why the oxycotin is not lasting the full 12 hours it should? I go to see my doctor in 2 days. I am going to be out of my oxycotin tomorrow and I am scared of the withdrawal as I feel like I want to crawl out of my skin and I start flopping like a fish. I work full time and can't afford to take time off. What suggestions do you have for increasing the oxycotin or oxycodone? Please help!!

Hello! I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having.

It is, however, completely normal for your body to eventually become tolerant to any given dose of a medication that you take for a long period of time. Your doctor is fully aware of this. Sooner or later, everyone needs a dosage adjustment or to switch to a different medication. This information can be found in many pain management resources.

There are higher doses of Oxycontin available and your doctor will most likely need to prescribe the next step up.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Have you seen your doctor, yet?

I was taking immediate release Oxycodone about 80mg per 24hrs. MD recently prescribed Oxycontin 15mg every 12hrs. with 10mg IR for breakthrough pain. My follow up visit he increased the Oxycontin to 30mg every 12 hours and left the 10mg as needed every 8hrs for breakthrough. Should I be concerned that I did not try the 20mg Oxycontin before the 30mg? I do find that I am requiring more of the 10mg breakthrough doses with the 15mg hence his decision to increase. Just concerned and want to be responsible. Thanks for your feedback.
