The Difference Between Senna 8 6 Mg Tab And Dss 50mg

I've been prescribed both by the same doctor with the expressed knowledge that they are different. I don't use this doctor any longer and would like to avoid contacting her. Both are laxatives to assist with side affects from chemotherapy and narcotic pain medication. I'm curious if one is any different than the other aside from their color and manufactures.

Yes, they are different. The DSS stands for Docusate Sodium, it is actually considered a stool softener. Unlike a stimulant laxative, it will take 12 to 72 hours to produce a bowel movement, it really just helps soften it up, which may get it moving. Its typical side effects may include nausea and gas.

Senna, however, is a natural herb that is used as a laxative, so it actually does help make your bowels move. Its typical side effects may include nausea, stomach pain, abdominal cramping and diarrhea.

Thank you for the reply. I was looking for the answer to the same question and my name is also Lisa and I was also prescribed the same drugs for the same reason as the Lisa that posted this question. I've read over and over that it's advised that this should not be taken over 7 days unless under the direction of a doctor. This has me concerned. Even with taking 2 senna dss a day i have very hard bm's and it's painful to pass. It's possible i have fissures because there is blood when I wipe. I've told my doctor for months and everything she's prescribed has been declined by my insurance. Sorry for the somewhat graphic details.
