The active ingredient in this is Oxytetracycline, this is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat many different types of infections.

Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, diarrhea and photo-sensitivity.

As to how often it is taken, that can vary, depending on the infection being treated, its severity and whether it is being used to treat an adult or a child. Generally these tablets are taken 2 to 3 times a day, but this site is not medical professionals and you should follow your doctor's prescribing instructions.
