I had a pillar cyst removed from the back of my head and the wound got infected, so the doctor prescribed this med to clear it up. Wow! I have never had an allergic reaction to anything in my life, but this drug knocked me for a loop. I thought I had the stomach flu one day--kept trying to throw up, diarrhea, stiff neck, headache, feverish, affected my vision. I slept the entire day. I stopped taking the med because my stomach wouldn't tolerate anything. The next day, I started to feel better, so started back on the med and the symptoms came back with a venegaence--. that's when I looked up the side effects and called the doctor. I got into the shower after that and noticed I had a horrible rash all over the upper part of my body. It's been almost 24 hours since I stopped taking it altogether--I feel a little better, but the rash is still very pronounced, my neck is stiff, I feel headachy and feverish. I am hoping this will all clear up in another day. Does anyone know if having a severe reaction like this does any permanent damage? I can't say this is the worst I've ever felt in my life, but it's close! All I can say is this drug and I do not get along!!

Hello, Annie! How are you feeling? I'm very sorry about the reaction you've had to this medication.

I had a very similar allergic reaction and can tell you that it will take about two weeks for the rash to clear up and all of the symptoms to go away, but no, it doesn't do any permanent damage.

However, you do need to stay away from this medication in the future, because such allergic reactions tend to get worse with repeated exposure to the allergen.

According to the FDA, approximately 3% of people end up being allergic to this medication, since it is a sulfa based drug and suffers symptoms such as those you described. Some even go into anaphylactic shock, which could be a risk for you in the future.

Which antibiotic did you switch to? Most of them can cause side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea, so you may still experience some symptoms.

Thanks for your encouragement and for the heads up re: how long it takes to get back to normal. The rash/mottling is slowly receding, but definitely still there. Yes, I will be very careful now that I know how my body reacts to this. I have a lot more empathy now for people who have allergic reactions!

Sorry. . .I forgot to respond to your question re: the new antibiotic I'm on. It's minocycline. I started taking it yesterday. We'll see how it goes.
