Suboxone Side Effects And Questions

Updated

Hi. My girlfriend is a recovering addict and takes suboxone regularly (prescribed). Its hard for me to tell the difference between the side effects of suboxone and the dope. She stays up all night restless and cleans and gets moody often. She also takes Prozac and was prescribed topamax but does not take topamax. Can you tell me if this is normal? Also is it possible to feel high off of proxy or H while on suboxone?

Unfortunately, nobody would be able to answer your first question with any certainty but your GF, simply because side effects to the same meds may vary significantly among different people. There are certain tell tale signs that should make you suspicious...but then I'm sure you wouldn't be asking this q if you weren't already. That means you are at a point where you need a definitive confirmation and the only way to tell for sure is to ask to diagnose her urine...(and then a few times more, just to make sure...always in random time intervals, without giving her prior warnings). If you coat this suggestion in a veil of a loving and concerned BF who just wants to put his mind at ease, there's no reason she should refuse, provided she is clean and cares about your feelings. A defiant reaction in itself may be very revealing and needs to prompt you to have a "very serious talk". Don't accept a response like "my suboxone prescriber is giving me UA's" because these drug panels are not random and many addicts simply stop using their H and go back on subs a few days before seeing their doc, since H is only detectable in urine for 2-4 days after last use.

What is the reason that she was prescribed topamax? If it's for migraines, then I wouldn't worry too much, but if it's for seizures, I would be very concerned as you know what will eventually happen. Find out from her what is the reason she stopped taking it..side effects?

Although it is difficult to feel high on opiates in response to a spontaneous craving while on suboxone (unless one uses elephant doses to displace the tightly bound sub off the recepter ), it is possible with some advanced planning even with regular doses of opiates. One must simply stop taking their suboxone for a few days and the majority of previously occupied receptors are now free and ready to accept the H.

From your post, I think you might not quite understand what Suboxone contains, one of its ingredients in the potent opiate Buprenorphine, it is coupled with Naloxone, which prevents the abuse of other narcotics, while someone is under treatment with it.

So no, she can't get high off of other drugs, while taking it, but it will cause many of the same side effects as other narcotic opiates.

It has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

If she's getting moody and restless, she might not be on the correct dose. She should discuss that with her doctor.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Hello, As an addict, or actually former Really bad addict, I was waking up every morning and was taking at the end before I came to the reality that I Truly needed help, I was taking between 7 & 8 oxycontin 80mg pills chewed up as well as 15 to 20 percoset 10/325 pills at the same time as well as a handful of percoset 5/325 Pills Every morning before work, Yeah I was That Bad, I woke up every morning at 4:30 am or before with severe withdrawals, and I had to take that just to get back to being normal. Now to Answer your question, she may be like I was, I got fired up and awake and ready for anything when I was taking the pills and felt "Normal " again, I actually would take them before my morning shower, and after I got out of the shower and got dressed I would take usually 2 -2mg bar xanax just to slow me down, my point being is that if she has a metabolism like mine she probably gets amped up on them instead of falling asleep or feeling drowsy like most people, You might find out what time she's taking her last dose in the evening and move it up to an earlier afternoon dose, I was on suboxone for at least 7 years after taking methadone at a clinic ( which was 2 hours away ) every morning for over 150 days straight, when I found my suboxone Dr. I was extremely grateful! But anyway, Im now taking subutex, and if I take it in the evening around 5 p.m. I have a lot of trouble going to sleep unless I take Melatonin 10 mg tablets one break in half so it kicks in faster and I take one whole to allow me to stay asleep. I wake up feeling refreshed and well rested, You can by Melatonin at any wal-mart or Walgreens, it's fairly cheap for what you get. That will definitely help her go to sleep and stay asleep, it's over the counter, like a vitamin, and your brain naturally produces it and when you abuse prescription drugs as I did or use H, you burn out the receptors in your brain that produce seritonin as well as Melatonin, so just like the prescribed meds she takes for her seritonin reuptake, the Melatonin will also help her brain heal. I Hope you at least try to get her to take the melatonin, it works great and she'll feel great the next Morning for her first dose again! Good luck and I Hope for the best for you and your girlfriend! ~Lanze 777~

It is more likely the Prozac, when combined with suboxone it can increase the risk of serotonin toxicity and she is showing some symptoms. Insomnia, irritable, impulsive, restlessness.... Just tap her knee area while sitting to elicit the patella reflex and if she overreact kicking forward she is toxic. Lowering the Prozac slowly and carefully will help but it will take several weeks and if her dose of Suboxone has not been reduce consider it.

U can get inebriated off of Suboxone when u 1st start taking it. The "up all night" will eventually wear off. For me it ended in depression & sleeping all day & not wanting 2 do anything I used 2 enjoy. Some ppl, Suboxone doesn't affect like that & they actually go about their lives as almost normal people. However, I have started lowering my dose & the moodiness & depression are easing up although anxiety is getting higher. Also, it could be the psych meds too along with the subs. Everyone reacts differently 2 medications so it could be she just needs time 2 adjust 2 the subs, she may need a lower dose or her psych meds aren't working like they should

Well, Suboxone can make some people act that way, although I just stay tired, but if I'm low or don't have any for a day & go back to my normal dose I have a crap ton of energy. Antidepressants & Suboxone can be dangerous together, serotonin syndrome, so make sure both her sub & psych Dr know that she's taking each medication. Also, I saw a comment telling you to ask her for a drug test. That's not gonna end well. Even if she isn't doing anything anymore, she will get defensive bc that's just how addicts are. Just try talking to her, yes, she will get defensive, but if she really isn't doing anything, then it should be fine. Also, just in case, make sure you keep narcan close by.
