Stopping Lisinopril (Page 2)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have been taking 10 mg/day of Lisinopril for 3 months and have developed a tightening in the chest and flu like symptoms. Within the past 3 weeks I have felt progressively worse and would like to stop. Is it ok to just quit or must I wean myself off?

Our doctor and pharmacist said it was okay to stop taking Lisinopril cold turkey. Although, it may not be a bad idea to switch over to the herb Hawthorn which acts as a natural ace inhibitor.

I've only been taking this medication for 3 days and i just stopped it today because it can damage your liver. Is it ok that i just stopped it? It was a 40mg tablet taken once a day.

I know how scary health issues can be. I hope someone is with you. I don't know if you have been in contact with your doctor, but you are the only person who knows just how "off" your body is right now. I don't think you should hesitate to seek medical help if you feel you need it. Best wishes for answers and better health.

If you have bilateral stenosis if the kidney don't take Lisinopril. It might make you get kidney failure.

My dad took lisinopril for 2 days, and had a bad allergic reaction. His hands swelled up to where he couldn't make a fist, and sore tongue & lips. He finally let me take him to emergency room, and they gave him IV to neutralize the lisinopril. Lisinopril almost killed him. It has been 2 months since, and his tongue is VERY sore. The Doctor gave him mouthwash yesterday, but sore tongue isn't improving.

I've been asked for an update with my lisinopril experience. Looking back my comments go way back and I haven't participated for some time, but:
When I went OFF linsinopril my symptoms disappeared after a few very minor episodes. I am now on another BP medication that does control my BP and the other symptoms no longer exist. Yes! many take lisinopril with no ill effects, but some, myself included, know that severe reactions DO happen. May it not happen to you, or if it does, may your primary care get you off the denial go-round I went through.

Albuterol can also raise blood sugar levels. It's best to check with your doctor.

Lisinopril removes water from the body like a diuretic. That may be why people think this drug is similar to Lasix.

Years ago I was prescribed Lisinipril/HCTZ. As an Asthmatic they forgot to take into account the use of inhalers (ALBUTEROL) which can raise BP.

Please share what "natural remedies" worked for him. Although all of our bodies are unique in our reactions (an idea that seems foreign to some medical doctors) many of us have been on a medication roller coaster for years and are willing to try other options. Thank you.

Hawthorne is a natural ace inhibitor an it strengthens the heart muscle. Skullcap is great for anxiety an supplying the heart with nutrients that are depleted by other blood pressure medicine. Always check with your doctor if you add herbs to your diet.

When I finally got off lisinopril, I stopped having bad reactions but still had three of them then that weren't severe. It took a while to get the stuff out of my system.
Next, I went to clonidine patch system that really did work for Blood pressure. My side effects for that were what everyone else called insomnia but what it amounted to was that it rescheduled my body's normal timing so that I was wide awake in bed, but actually fell asleep sometimes during the day. That continues to this day, but melatonin seems to help get me back to normal sleep cycles. (I wouldn't recommend clonidine to anyone, but in my case, it's the only thing that worked.)

Your swelling from clonidine is something new to me. For clonidine BE SURE you check out contraindications for anything else you take now or will take. There are apps online that will do that for you. Listen to your doctor, but DON'T accept his word as gospel.

A previous reply here said "You're not alone." Believe me he's right about that. Also, anxiety is a legitimate diagnosis, but some doctors use it much too often when it is not the case. Dump them.

To SickofDrugPushingDrs, please be very cautious when taking whatever the next drug is. After lisinopril, I was prescribed losartan with the assurance that, since it is a different class of med, I probably wouldn't react. Reaction was swollen tongue and throat landing me in the ER. Next came chlonidine-totally different I was told. Greatly swollen upper lip and right leg. I was referred to a nephrologist who wondered why no doctor had ever even tried a diuretic and prescribed one. (It's been two weeks and I am praying it works.)

Good luck to you. I can sympathize with the burning tongue issue. Have you tried keeping grapes in the freezer and putting a few in your mouth? Or is that possible with your diabetes?

Oh, and don't let anyone tell you that you're imagining it. (If you can't "document" it, it might not really be happening and could actually be anxiety. That's what I was told by a doctor.) Let someone have burning tongue for awhile and see how anxious, frustrated, and depressed they might be. Hang in there. You're not alone.

YES!!!! Been dealing with burning mouth syndrome for past 1 1/2 year... Dr gave me Constanzi Solution which is a special compounded medicine given to cancer patients (although I was told I don't have cancer) and it works great at first, but always returns. Now to hear of a tie-in with lisinopril doesn't surprise me at all!!! I am getting off of it immediately. Also have developed diabetes at this late age (almost 70) and have read how lisinopril can adversely affect blood sugar in addition to damaging liver & kidneys. Sad what the greedy drug industry puts out there to unsuspecting people.

I don't think the water pill and lisinopril are related but I'm no doctor. Do some research on your own and if you aren't sure why you take the water pill ask your doctor OK.

I stopped taking lisinopril 3 days ago. I didn't wean my self off. I stopped because I couldn't take the shortness of breath and tiredness..and the cough from the pits of hell. Should I continue to take my prescribed water pill?

that is the same way I felt, getting worse and worse. I just stopped and the sickness went away in a couple of days. I did have the cough for a few months after, but it was not even close to how bad I was feeling.
