Side Effects Of Tussigon

Updated

My dog who is 13 was prescribed Tussigon for a cough. He has a collapsed trachea. The drug made him very sick and he struggled to breathe. He needed emergency treatment and oxygen. It cost big bucks. Was this a mistake on the vets part?

I am not familiar with veterinary medications or procedures, so I cannot say whether or not any of this information is correct, however, here goes....

If the Tussigon used for dogs contains the same ingredient as that used for humans then it contains Hydrocodone, a narcotic that is often used to help treat coughing.

The problem that I see is that since it is a narcotic, it can also cause respiratory depression, meaning if someone or an animal has trouble breathing, there is a chance it could worsen it.

Now, I can't say this was a veterinary mistake, like I said I am really clueless on this and am just postulating a theory.

Have you discussed it with them?

My 6 year old pug is on this drug and also has a collasped trachea. No problems with the drug, but steroids help him more.

My 12 year old Pomeranian was diagnosed with colapsed trachea about three years ago. This condition causes her to breath very heavily and noisily when she is excited. She is on the med Temaril everyday to control the condition. Every few weeks or so she will have an attack where her breathing is extremely labored and she sounds like a goose honking. Needless to say it is very stressful to see her in this distress. Her Vetinerarian prescribed Tussigon to ease these attacks, and it seems to work really well. My biggest concern right now is her persistant diahrea that seems to hit her every few days or so. She is on a low residue diet (vetinerarian formula), probiotics, and a medication called Metronidazole when she has an attack. I wish i could get her digestive issues under control!

My 12 year old pug, Bubba, has been diagnosed with cancer (from X-rays...no blood work). He is coughing a lot and sounds like it must hurt....it's kind of like a goose honking, as previously mentioned in this thread.
They seem to have written him off, saying he will probably only be around for another few months at the most...I'm only concerned about quality of life at this point. He's also on Temaril-P, Baytril, and Clindamycin...I much prefer homeopathic remedies but haven't been able to find a vet who does that. I have cut the doses in half. I'm also giving him MMS drops a couple of times a day to detox and help with the (alleged) cancer. If anyone knows of homeopathic or natural alternatives to these drugs, I would be most appreciative. I'm wondering if he has a collapsed trachia too, after reading these posts..

My 9 year old shih tzu has a collapsed trachea for about a year. He will go into episodes of coughing continuosly for days. Right now is hasn't stopped coughing for 3 days. He is on prednisone 2.5 mg, theophylline 100 mg 2x a day, hycodan every 8 hour and an antibiotic of zeniquin. He doesn't sound any better. What works the best for your dog? Any advice. thanks

Ask your vet for Tussigon. My pomeranian has the same problem with the collapsed trachea. Tussigon works wonders. She hardly coughs at this point. I give it to her twice a day. It's not cheap, but worth the money to see her comfortable.

My Lhasa Apso has a Collapsing Trachea also. We went to a specialist in Greenville, SC and he done a real time x-ray that showed just where the collapse in the trachea was located. He prescribed a drug called "Isupril Elixer" As I understand, the drug was developed and tested at Auburn University and isn't widely known by Veterinarians.

It has done wonders. Toby seldom coughs and I have been able to almost completely take him off the meds.

"Isupril Elixer" is a compounded liquid cough suppressant that I have to order from a pharmacy in Florida. Our Veterinarian has to call in the prescription each month because it is a controlled drug.

This is the best treatment available for dogs with collapsing trachea.

My 5 pound Maltese also has a collapsed trachea, and was prescribed Tussigon. This works reasonably well. For a period of time it was off the market and was not available anywhere. My vet prescribed Torbutrol, which is more expensive, but worked very rapidly (within a period of 5 minutes.) I would be interested to know where in Florida the Isupril Elixer was obtained since it appears at this time my baby is going to have to be consistently medicated.

My 14 yr. Old Westie has had chronic bronchitis for about a year now. He had been on Temaril-P for a while with no success, now he is on Dexamethason and still coughs every day and seems to have a weez too. The vet just prescribed Tussigan for the cough. I'm a little nervous about starting him on it. The vet told me that Westies are predisposed for having chronic bronchitis. Has anyone else heard of this?

Interesting because my 6lb Pom had a trachea collapse in July 2014. Had surgery at UC Davis and is doing an inhaler which costs me $200 every time I get a new one plus $13,000 in vet and surgery costs. Because they must of hit a nerve in the flap, he had to go back to surgery and was told it would cost another $2,000 for their mistake. This was after I paid $8,000 for surgery. What would you do? What that means from what they told me after the second rush into surgery is that any time he throws up I would hVe to go to the hospital. Well this could be unexpected so each emergency visit was $250 because they worry about aspiration pneumonia. So when I go they want to do ex rays, one time wanted to put him in ICU for Oxygen costing me another $1,000 to start. I told them no, prescribe antibiotics and he ended up fine. Recently I went to see a new vet and told her at times the mucus that builds up which makes him gag and sometimes throw up. She prescribed him this drug but I'm afraid to use it.

Re: lm (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

My dog is on four different meds for in larger heart and collapsed trachea. Of those, she takes Tussigon for the coughing associated with both. She takes this in the morning and before bed. It works well except it does not last 12 hours.
