Safety Of Melatonin Supplement

Updated

Sometimes my fiancee and i take a melatonin supplement that we got from Whole Foods in order to help us fall asleep. Personally I find that it works very well - and I feel relatively safe taking it because it is natural and not a "drug" per say... However I am just wondering if anybody else has experience or information about taking melatonin. From what I understand it is already produced naturallly by the body, so i wonder how they are able to synthesize this substance. I don't take it very often, just on days where I have to reset my sleep schedule. Any thoughts??

I took some the other night and it still took me awhile to fall asleep. There have been other times when it makes me very relaxed but I think my mind was too active. I don't think it should be taken every night since it might reduce the body's own production of melatonin.

It is suggested that Melatonin is safe to take for up to 3 months in low doses.

You can't sleep, so you take the pill. You fall asleep.
Doesn't that suggest to you that your body is already not producing enough naturally? So you take it for 4 months and you're still falling asleep. Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to where the harm is because I just don't see it. If you take it regularly for a period of time and then stop taking it for a couple of days to see if your body has adjusted without help might be the best course of action. If your body hasn't adjusted and you continue to take it and you continue to fall asleep, it might be time to ask your doctor what the next course of action would be. I'd say there's a good chance that you're not getting enough of something else which helps or promotes the natural occurrence of the chemical in the first place.

As Dave stated, Melatonin is listed by the FDA as generally considered as safe when used for 3 months, or less, in doses of 3mgs, or less.

It really doesn't induce sleep, but it can help reset your natural sleep cycle. Our bodies don't absorb more than 3mgs, at a time, so taking more than that is a waste.

As to how they synthesize it, I am not familiar with the process. Is there anyone that knows how it's done who can chime in?
