Provigil Cost Is Unfair

Updated

I'm on medicare, and my last prescription of Provigil cost $816 for a 30 day supply. I am a recovering liver transplant patient and had suffered from daytime sleepiness from Obstructive sleep apnea and Primary Biliary Cirrhosis. Provigil is prescribed specifically FOR these conditions, but I encounter resistance each time I request a refill. Without this medication, I am literally unable to arise in the morning and participate in a normal day, such as operating a vehicle. In prescribing the medication, my sleep medicine doctor states specifically what conditions I have that require its use. I am currently seeking organizations to which I can apply for help with the cost, and have had no success. The only site I've found for assistance is restricted to patients with no insurance. Teva seems to have priced this drug out of the market for those of us who legitimately need it.

I don't understand your comment about the company pricing this drug out of reach for those with insurance? I have M.S. These drugs are expensive. I use my insurance mail order and pay 90.00 for a 90 day supply of Copaxone. I also use Provigil for fatigue, it is priced the same 90.00 for a 90 day script through my mail order. Do you have access to using a mail order pharmacy? I don't have much info about Medicare as no one in my family has ever had to use it, we all worked at jobs where we could get insurance. My Copaxone would be 4,800.00 a month w/o insurance so I guess the Provigil doesn't seem that costly to me. Good luck.

Try Ritalin or Amantadine. I've had both for MS fatigue and they work well and both come in affordable generics. Good luck!

Hi, Maji! Sorry about the problem you're having.

Have you tried contacting the Partnership for Prescription Assistance?

They can help you see if there is a program you qualify for to help you with this medication. You can reach them at 888-477-2669

It is much easier than searching for programs yourself and trying to check the information on many different ones, because they have access to over 475 programs that they can check at once.

I've been taking Provigil since 2008. Last year, when I was placed on Medicare, I continued to take it - until I hit the gap. The price for a 30-day prescription was over $900. I am on disability, etc. and my income is a little under $2500/month. I have tried Ritalin, which enables me to get up in the morning and function - just. It makes me feel speedy and anxious. My problem is fatigue, which causes ADD like symptoms. But ADD medication does not relieve my fatigue. My quality of life is suffering because of my inability to afford this medication.

Unfortunately, the Partnership for Prescription Assistance is only for those who don't have prescription medication insurance. I have Medicare part D, and couldn't survive w/ out it. As a liver transplant patient, I require two different immunosuppressant drugs. Teva also only offers prescription assistance to patients who don't have insurance. When I called them, it was implied that I should consider ditching part D.

Maji-
Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield denied both Nuvigil and Provigil for me (I have major depression), so it's out of pocket while my doctor appeals on my behalf.

I just bought a 30 day supply of 200mg modafinil (generic Provigil) at Costco for $137 dollars. This was BY FAR the lowest price anywhere, but this was the member price. Seriously, it's worth getting a basic membership if you are not a member, just for that price alone. CVS quoted 380 for the exact prescription. Ridiculous! So call the membership warehouse stores closest to you for quotes - it's worth it.

Good luck and let us know what you do.

Rxoutreach.org will give you a 3 month supply for $80. Your doctor has to prescribe a 3 month supply for provigil.
