Pregnancy And Methadone

Updated

Okay so ive been on methadone for about a year. 90mg. But then i got pregnant. I am currently 6 months. I had to go up A LOT to feel okay during the day. I was on 140mg. I haven't went to my clinic for a week because the methadone started making me sick. I was throwing up all day and i couldn't eat it was horrible, so i stopped going. I still feel uncomfortable during the day but nothing too bad. How long will it take the methadone to get out of my system? I have my boyfriend who will be watching over me and taking care of me and everything. I just wanna know has anyone done this? I have 3 months before i give birth, my due date is august 2nd. I just wanna know advice anyone?

The whole point of taking methadone while one is pregnant, is to not be in any kind of withdrawal which can hurt or even kill that baby growing inside of you! If you haven't gone to your clinic for a week they will put you back on same day! Don't start taking opiates again! In 1991 I used both my methadone and opiates for my whole pregnancy. I took care of myself, but my son was born with no complications, other then being a drug affected baby. So even though he was otherwise healthy 7lbs, he had to be detoxed from the opiates. It took them almost 2 months before I brought him home! He can never use any opiates, or he will, and has become addicted, because his receptor sites are predisposed. I could go on and on, but you need to get back on methadone. I put my baby through withdrawals out of the womb. They weened him off with opium tincture, morphine, etc. You are putting your unborn child in more danger from being off of the methadone, or going back to illicit drugs!

Hi June,

Sorry to hear about your situation. Taking advice from someone who has personal experience in the matter, I would probably agree with what post #1 stated. But to answer your other question concerning how long it might take to get methadone out of your body, this is something that is unique to each individual based on several different influencing factors, including but not limited to one's body chemistry, metabolism, weight, frequency of use, half life, etc, etc... The overall consensus with most opioids/opiates in general is that they stay in your body for about 3-5 days. But I'm finding that due to methadone's long half life and other attributing factors, it could take a week. On the contrary, only through regular monitoring via a lab analysis or drug panel would you be able to know for certain. Back to the discussion though, I'd probably encourage you to do whatever is going to be best for your baby since they'd essentially feel the brunt of your decision(s).
