Phenytoin 420 - Plain White Gel Capsule With Imprint 420 Twice, No Other Markings

Updated

My prescription drug was changed from phenytoin with the purple band to phenytoin plain white with the number 420 printed twice on the capsule; I was told it was fine to take same formula and different manufacturer but when I asked if the fillers were the same the pharmacist stumbled and then said it is ok.
Since the medicine was changed without my knowledge or permission by somebody (nobody in the Dr.s office knows how this happened) I am wondering about it. Of course I will ask the doctor again ( I spoke to the nurse before) when I see him - he doesn't take phone calls), but I would like to know something before then.

Well, first no pharmacy is in any way obligated to always provide you with the product manufactured by any particular company that you have been getting.

It is completely normal for them to switch, depending on whatever company was offering the cheapest price at the time they needed to restock their supply.

The only thing they are obligated to do, in such a situation, is to make certain that they give the correct medication, in the correct dosage and check any allergy/interaction information.

And yes, the fillers may be different, but it is also likely that your pharmacist has never sat down and read the list of inactive ingredients for each one and compared them.

The capsule you received, however, with the 402 402 marking does contain 100mgs of Phenytoin.

When you are purchasing a generic, the pharmacy does not need your permission to provide you with whichever one they have available. The only time they would need you, or your doctor's permission for a switch would be if you were paying cash and requested the name brand only, or if your doctor wrote 'brand medically necessary' on the prescription.

Your doctor also does not have any control on what product, by what manufacturer, your pharmacy has in stock to fill your prescription.

Yes these are the same. They just have a different buffer to make it metabolize slower... not as good!
