Hi jerry,

What is it that you mean by applying for "RSS"? I'm sure you don't mean "Really Simple Syndication (RSS)" that websites use to feed headlines and news flashes, but I've never heard of the term/abbreviation being used in medical context...

By the way, if your Penicillin cream really is "months old" and you're questioning whether it's still ok to take - an accurate answer would depend upon how it was stored, and whether it already expired.

If that is the case and it is expired, then I think your best bet would probably be to get a new prescription, since older antibiotics (with less efficacy) may not fully eradicate a bacterial infection; potentially leading to antibiotic-resistant bacteria that is harder to kill.

Thanks for posting back! And my apologies for the misinterpretation. While I have yet to come across any specific details on Penicillin’s efficacy towards red scrotum syndrome... one study conducted by NIH.gov reports that red scrotum syndrome can be successfully treated with oral doxycycline.

They note that patients who took doxycycline for 2 weeks ended up experiencing a 50-80% improvement of symptoms; and even go on to state that their symptoms completely diminished within a treatment period of 2-3 months.

Perhaps you can ask your doctor about trying this as an alternative to Penicillin since it has a proven/documented track record?
