My daughter was prescribed paragoric as an infant fo colick. I only gave it to her twice because I sampled it and it hurt my stomach, so I refused to give it to her again. Instead I was advised to give her catnip tea and it worked inside of 3 days. I made a tea and added honey in her bottle...she loved it. Catnip is very soothing to the digestive system.

I am glad to hear that you had a good experience using catnip tea however it is unsafe to give honey to infants as a sweetener or in any form as it can cause infant botulism. This includes honey in cooked form. Check with your pediatrician regarding the catnip tea. I have found for my children and now grandchild that Mylicon drops (Simethicone) does wonders for collicky babies.

I never have taken paregoric, however back in 1964 my wife got this migraine head ache and went all over Lexington, Ky looking for paregoric. No one would sell it to her. I never knew what it was, she was always so secretive about so many things. She probably had had it as a child several times, maybe addicted? We have been divorced many years. I have been addicted to nicotine and THC. So much a different kind of addiction that it is like night and day. I have been free of both for 25 years.

You were given a correct response. How paregoric is camphorated tincture of opium and it is commercially available to pharmacies. But it is very expensive. $900 for 200 ml.

Hello, were you able to find a source?

I worked with my local pharmacist and my nutrition doctor who just kept calling pharmacies until they found a couple who would do it. At the moment it seems as though a compounding pharmacy is the most likely source. That is where I got mine even thought they didn't have to compound it. Hope this helps if you want the name and number of the pharmacy that I obtained it, let me know. They should be able to help. They can either do it for you or give you some ideas where you can get it in your area.

You can't get paregoric any longer but you can get the equivalent drug, camphorated tincture of opium. I would think you could get it at any compounding pharmacy like I did in Tampa. I can send you the name of my pharmacy if you aren't able to locate it locally.

HI. There is another forum out there for Paregoric. I came across this one just now. I received confirmation by Walgreens today, that the manufacturer will be making Paregoric again. They did not give a date though, just that it's coming. Therefore, i recommend everyone contact their pharmacy and ask them to "put out a search for Paregoric and please call the manufacturer if unable to locatre some.". Maybe if they start receiving lots of calls from actual Pharmacies, they will speed up the process.

In the mean time, there are 4 items which may or may not work for people.

First... LOMOTIL. It's a prescripton pill that is often prescribed in liu of Paregoric. It will work for a lot of people.

Second... Loperamide... which is over the counter. IT's the non prescription form of Lomotil. Not as potent, but again, it will work for a lot of people and is worthy of trying.

Third... is liquid morphine. This has helped me quite a bit and it's covered by insurance. (Many talk about Morphine Anyhdrous, which is a compound. Most insurance will not cover it. Morphine is the main ingredient. The "anhydrous" is just filler, per Walgreens and there's no active ingredient in it. Therefore, straight up liquid morhine may be a cheaper alternative than the compounds).

Fourth and finally... liquid opium. That too works for me, on occasion.

Both the morphine and opium are hard core. They will knock you on your butt by the end of the day. It makes me sooooo tired. So it's used sparingly. DO NOT MIX ever... but one of these may work for others as they partially worked for me.

The good news here though is that Paregoric is coming back, per Walgreens who called the manufacturer only 2 days ago (8/19/12). So again, please, call your pharmacy and ask them to call the manufacturer... maybe if the see a demand, they will work more quickly to get it produced again.

wouldn't you think that chronic, DAILY diarrhea would be appropriate for me? I was told by my GI doc to take extra fiber. It has been THREE YEARS, do think I am really that stupid not to have tried fiber in the first MONTH???

I have "intestinal migraines" and have used up the bottle of paregoric I got for my child 28 years ago. I use the stuff judiciously hence I am only just now out! 28 years! Does anyone know of a source in Mississippi? or Pennsylvania? or anywhere else for that matter. Thanks

Just got a call from my GI Dr. today who told me she had no luck helping me acquire paregoric or tincture of opium. I think she made a good faith LOCAL effort however and may not have used the professional grapevine, so to speak. I will try to prompt her to do so and update when I have anything to report.
