Oxycodone For Back Pain

Updated

I have had moderate to severe back pain for several years now, and have been prescribed meloxicam, vicodin, zanaflex, flexoril, and percocet, just to nam a few. i ignored the pain for several years, but it got to the point where i had to get it checked out. after getting an mri, they discovered several problems with my lower back. degenerative bone disease, slipped discs, arthritis, etc. Most of this is due to the nature of my work, and a couple of motorcycle wrecks. Here is my main question and problem. Out of all of the things that I have been given, I find that oxycodone works the best for me personally, without making me drowsy, or having any other adverse side affects. My doctor was giving me 90 extra strength vicodin per month, with another 90 percocets to use during the extra bad days over a 6 month period. This was in conjunction with a muscle relaxer, too, all of which made me drowsy. I know that taking that much vicodin and percocet is not good at all for my liver. I take 40 mg of prozac as well for an antidepressant. $0 mg of oxycodone twice a day, sometimes only once, relieves my painto a tolerant level and produces no side effects. However, when I mentioned this to my doctor, he is reluctant to prescribe it. I have since been to a pain management clinic, where I now getting injections in my lower facets every six months. This is a big help, and has made a lot of difference, but I would still rather take 1 dose of oxycodone and not have to take all of the other stuff at all, with the exception of my antidepressant. My friends and family tell me to go to a certain doctor that will prescribe it, but I don't feel comfortable doing this, nor do I think it is morally the right thing to do. I know what works best for me and my body, what am I not seeing or understanding to get the medication I want from my doctors?

Well, first off, I would like to state that long-term use of Oxycodone is not going to be good for your liver, either. It is just as dangerous and damaging as other medications.

It is, also, the active narcotic in the Percocet you've been taking, coupled with Acetaminophen.

That said, I am very sorry to read what you are going through. It is a sad fact that due to worried forced on the doctors by the government, many chronic pain patients are forced to do without the proper medication that could help their condition.

The main issue most doctors have is that whenever they write a prescription for a potent narcotic, like straight Oxycodone, especially in its time released form, they must be ready to explain to the FDA why they did so.

If the government questions it and doesn't agree that it was necessary, they face sanctions, fines and suspension or loss of their medical license.

On top of all of this, they also have to worry about the possibility of abuse and addiction.

The goal of the pain management facility you are going to, is to try to relieve your pain without the strict use of narcotics. They eventually hope to get you to the point where you don't even need their treatments as often. As far as I can tell, this is probably your best idea.

Regular use of the Oxycodone would not do this and eventually you would become tolerant to your current dose and require higher and higher dosages.

The only other possibility is to try a different pain management clinic. Have you looked in this option?

I have carpal tunnel (sp) in my right elbow and wrist. The doctor that I have been going to most of my life is out until dec. Well, he has a woman doc subbing for him. She was the one that decided it was carpal tunnel. But all that she would give me was Ultram 50 mg. I liked the idea of trying something non-narcotic so I gave it a shot. After about 3 weeks, the med was just not helping, not to mention I had headaches, short of breath and trouble sleeping. When I told her this, she refused to give me anything else and, infact, treated me like a pill-head (for lack of a better word). I don't have insurance and that particular office only charges me $50 a visit. I have a family and can't really afford to do doctor shopping. Any suggestions?
Also, does anyone know of an online doctor that I can talk to that will prescribe what is needed that I can also get the meds from?
Also, I'd like to say that ultram is horrible! I have had terrible withdrawls from taking 3 50 mg tablets a day for 3 weeks. UGH!

p.s. Hang in there Crystal...we all make mistakes. Unfortunately some people just like to stir up crap and make others look bad.

Id like to see some evidence that oxycodone is bad for your liver cause everything Ive read says other wise. Its the tylonal that is bad for your liver. Also useing oxy on a regular basic does not build much if any tolerance. Abusing it is what builds tollerence. Oxycodone has never been proven to have any negative long term afects to your body. Some wouldd even argue that it is good for a body dealing with the stress of constant pain. Get your facts straight bro. U act like u do but u aviouslly don't.

I have been on 5mg oxycodone every 6 hours for over 5 years. I have Hep C and it's the only med i can take. My back worse this last month so dose is doubled. I just received steriod with lidocaine but it lasted only 5 days. A friend who is a nurse says i should be on oxycontin with oxycodone as a break through when it gets really bad, and boy does it. Any thoughts?

Long-Term Effects of Oxycodone
One of the long-term effects of oxycodone is addiction that is characterized by greater dependence on the drug and tolerance to the dosage. Tolerance to a drug means that you must take more and more of the medication to get the same early effect.

After long-term use of oxycodone, men may also experience a decreased level of testosterone or enlargement of the prostate. Other long-term effects include excessive sweating, swelling in the arms and legs, and chronic constipation.

Because chronic use leads to tolerance and dependence, you may experience withdrawal symptoms if a prescription is reduced or stopped. These withdrawal symptoms can involve signs of central nervous system hyperactivity and will peak 48 to 72 hours after your last dose. Physical symptoms will be eliminated within a week but it may take longer to erase the psychological addiction.

Withdrawal from oxycodone will begin with anxiety followed by an increased rate of breathing, runny nose, stomach cramps, tearing and sweating. Although withdrawal from oxycodone is distressing it is not fatal.

I was told by a well respected surgeon that oxycodone does not hut your liver or kidneys. You need to be mindful when taking oxycodone/325 with acetaminophen or ibuprofen. The oxycodone alone will not harm these vital organs. Patients must watch thier consumption of acetaminophen and ibuprofen - per new guidelines on acetaminophen, a patient must not exceed 3500mg a day no more than 1000 mg per dosage. Please research maximum daily amount of ibuprophen also. The patient should continue to use the least amt of oxycodone to relieve symptoms. If you find that your current regimine is not helping with your pain, visit your doctor again to review other options.... There are many options available to you if you seek them out.

I have moderate back pain from a multiple myeloma cancer, now in remission after a stem cell transplant two years ago. I was taking hydrocodone every 6 hours as needed. I am hoping to take a trip to Barcelona, Spain and walking much may be painful. My wife is is concerned about liver damage with the acetaminophene in the hydrocodone. Would oxicodone be safer for this trip?

Crystal is correct about mixing Prozac (or any SSRI antidepressant) with Oxycodone and many other medications being potentially dangerous. The combination may cause Seretonin Syndrome which is an overdose of Seretonin in the brain which can lead to death. However, once diagnosed it is easily remedied and being aware of the symptoms which include rapid heartbeat, breathlessness, excessive sweating is the best prevention. I am on 20mg OxyContin, 20-30mg Oxycodone and 40mg Prozac and have been fine. Once a negligent prescribed me Tramal with an SSRI antidepressant and I thought I was going to die, not a good mix. If you are concerned about your liver you should take a daily milk thistle tablet or a LivaTone Shot and have 3 monthly blood tests. I have been on oxycodone for approximately 4 years for a ruptured disc and nerve damage and have not built any tolerance or addiction, although if I stop them I am totally immobilised by pain. I have tried many other medications with no benefit and often negative consequences ranging from increased pain to suicidal thoughts (gabapentin). Good luck and keep trying. Perhaps another pain clinic if possible, mine is very supportive.

In the area of the low back the spine consists of five bones or the vertebrae. Each vertebra has a special cartilage called the discs as well as many holes and openings called the spinal canal.

I think oxycodone is just better period, but certainly taking 4-6 hydrocodone a day will not affect u in the lease degree. That is only 1.3grams-2gm of tylenol a day so u are fine

Physiotherapy is highly important when medical treatment does not show any result. The one who has got tired of their problem in knee is advised to get this treatment. This treatment is so safe that there are hardly any side effects.

I have been having back pain for at least 5 years. Had a few MRI's and C.T scans done. First results showing herniated disc's in two spots. Had another done last year, now showing arthritis of the spine and bone growth in which the bone is constantly compressing the nerve and of course the herniated discs. Doctor prescribed T3's but it doesn't work. I'm just wondering how Peracet's work? Will I look like a fool if I ask for that prescription? oh yeah...I recently was told I have Follicular Lymphoma.

I'm sorry. It is Freeman Pain Institute. They have offices in Union and Edison, NJ.
They are very good, but they will prescribe pain medication IF YOU NEED IT.

I am off the Oxycodone! I am not a happy camper some days, because the pain gets so severe, but with an OTC pain killer, ice packs and a heating pad, I'm doing it!

Just a correction to Candy's previous post ... please note that Oxycodone does not have Tylenol (Acetaminophen) in it. It can be combined with Acetaminophen, but a common brand name of that combination (Oxycodone + Acetaminophen) is called Percocet. Otherwise oxy is just plain oxy on its own. Hope this clears things up!

Oxycodone is only bad for your liver BECAUSE IT HAS TYLENOL IN IT. That's why a lot of doctors prescribe Roxycodone WITHOUT TYLENOL!

You are so right Mr. sick of jumping thru hups!
