Opiate And Contrave

Updated

Hello I've been on high does opiates for injuries due to a terrible auto accident for 16 yrs to date. My doctor at my request prescribed my contrave. How long do I need to be off opiates before starting the contrave? I know people can take suboxone almost immediately. With the bupropion in contrave does it help stop pain from withdrawal effects of the opiates?

You need to be in full withdrawal from the opiates, before you can take this, unless your doctor has instructed otherwise. Taking it too soon could cause you to go into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. The same is true of Suboxone, it cannot be taken immediately.

Bupropion is an antidepressant, not an analgesic, so no.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of Contrave as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea and weight loss.

Is there anything else I can help with?

You must be fully off all opioids before taking any preparation with naltrexone!

Oral naloxone (in suboxone) is turned into an inactive chemical that does nothing to the opioid receptors.

Oral naltrexone is a very strong opioid blocker.

When you take suboxone you take oral naloxone (does nothing once eaten) and oral buprenORPHINE which is a strong pain killer like mORPHINE. It results in a strong opioid effect for the user. Only one medication in this preparation is responsible for the overall effect, and it is not the opioid blocker.

When you take Contrave you take oral Naltrexone which acts as a competitive blocker of the opioid sites...this means it blocks opioids out of the receptor. You are also consuming Bupropion which is a stimulant. Both medicines in this preparation have an effect.

You don't need to be in full withdrawals before starting Contrave.

You do need to be in full withdrawals before starting suboxone.. this is because buprenorphine is a weaker feeling opioid but will kick stronger opioids (like morphine from acetylated morphine which is either diacetyl or mono acetyl morphine) out of the site causing an addict to be thrown into withdrawals.

You must be completely clean of opioid dependence before consuming any preparation of oral Naltrexone, including Contrave. Hope that helps!

I've been on hydrocodone for a little while, I was prescribed contrave and was not told by my pharmacist that fills all of my meds that the two were not to be taken together. So I took my first contrave today and few hours later when needed I took my hydrocodone... what should I expect?
