Need Hycodan - Can't Get It Anywhere?

Updated

My dog needs this medicine every day due to a collapsing trachia. I have been told that it's not being produced anymore. Does anyone know where I can get it???
Thanks!

No, I've tried them all and they tell me that they can't get it. It has something to do with being a controled substance and the FDA has put a hold on production. Why, I don't know and what are we supposed to do in the meantime???
It's just a terrible situation!!!

Carlene- good news! I too have been looking for Hycodan for my Pom who takes it every 6 hours- the FDA has put a hold on production, but the good news is that my Vet prescribed the liquid form called Hydrocodone- at first I was skeptical, but I mix his dose with a tsp of wet food and he eats it right up. It's working for us- Good luck!

Hi Shana,
I have a pom too and I tried the liquid (is it llike a sweet cough syrup?), but she wouldn't have anything to do with it and literally quit eating anything that I tried to put it in (even peanut butter). When I tried to give it to her in a syring, we had more on her coat that down her throat - not a good thing. I just gave up on it. However, I do have some good news, I just found Tussagon at my local Wal Mart pharmacy. My vet wrote a perscription for 5mg tablets and they are helping. I don't know how long it will be available, but for now she is doing better. Thanks for your help.

Good news for you too- I'm glad that my little guy eats it right up in a little wet food- I didn't even try to squirt it in his mouth with a syringe- that would be a big mess! Good news to hear that you found the pill form and best of luck to you! :-)

I have also had a nightmare trying to find Hydrocodone in 5mg tablets or Hycodan or ANYTHING in pill form for my little Sheltie who also has a mysterious persistent cough. I was also told they discontinued it by everyone and now I have been calling every pharmacy in the state to try to get whatever is left. The idea of a sweet sticky syrup is not great for a dog. WHY ON EARTH WOULD THIS MANUFACTURER STOP MAKING SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE ARE USING AND DEPEND ON? HOW HATEFUL! So, if you say that Walmart carries the Tussigon which is what they fill her prescription with as a generic alternative, then THANK YOU so much! I hope that they have an enormous stock pile, otherwise, I will have to have my vet either compound a similar drug or figure something out QUICKLY as you cannot just take your pet off of Hycodan without wheaning them slowly. I'll report back what happens since this is the ONLY site I have found addressing this issue.

Well there you have it! NO TUSSIGON AT WALMART! Nope! Everyone is ALL OUTTA Tussigon, Hycodan, Hydrocodone... I hate this manufacturer for doing this and I am GOING TO GET AN ANSWER!!!

I also had the pharmacy change my dogs prescript hycodan to Tussigon which has hydrocodone in it. Found it at very old old family pharmacy in our town that also has a soda fountain. Get away from the chain stores & you might have better luck. I did.

You people do konw that hydrocodone and hycodan are just people drugs right... its called vicodin and its a narcotic pain reliever....you do know this right....??

A great majority of drugs used in veterinary medicine are also used in human medicine, it is just dosages that vary between species.
Tussigon (hycodan) has been unavailable in both human and veterinary pharmacies until recently. Production has been started again though, and the medication is slowly becoming available again, although it seems just in human hospitals first, and perhaps a few of the online pharmacies.

And to Adam (You people do konw that hydrocodone and hycodan are just people drugs right... its called vicodin and its a narcotic pain reliever....you do know this right....?? )
Vicodin is a brand name for a drug combination of hydrocodone and paracetamol (acetaminophen). It is not the same thing as tussigon. Tussigon is the brand name of a combination of homatropine and hydrocodone. The combinations of drugs and the dosages make these medication different from one another, and are not usually used for the same reason. Tussigon is used as a cough suppressent while vicodin is usually used as a pain reliever (though not in animals, it is not usually effective for them), although it does have some anti-tussive (cough suppressing) properties.

My maltipoo is also suffering with collapsing trachea and I am unable to find Tussigon either. I have switched to Torbutrol, which is more expensive, but it does suppress his cough too. You may want to try that. I am going to check the smaller pharmacies too for Tussigon.

Yes, except when you call Village Pharmacy that act like you have three heads and asking for compounding is some sort of who's on first conversational opportunity. Yes, a few of the ONLINE PHARMACYS still have Tussigon by some miracle - for how long I don't know.

My Sheltie needed med. for her cough etc. My vet prescribed tussigon. I looked it up and found it is or like hydrocodan. My vet had it on hand. It sounded like she could get it anytime, but I presume it is a prescription.

Hycodan is a brand name for hydrocodone bitartrate plus homatropine methybromide. Several manufacturers make generic versions (Actavis, Hi Tech Pharma, Morton Grove, King Pharms). It is available as 1.5 mg and 5 mg tablets and syrup. All human drugs containing hydrocodone require a prescription as hydrocodone is an addictive drug.

Tussigon is slowly being released back onto the market. And to Dan: (FIND A COMPOUNDING PHARMACY. THEY CAN MAKE ANYTHING! IF YOU CAN'T FIND ONE IN YOUR AREA, WE'LL SHIP TO YOU. VILLAGE COMPOUNDING PHARMACY) I've worked in pharmacy for 16 years. Compounding pharmacies are great, but they can't make ANYTHING. Only certain things can be legally obtained to mix. I don't know if this is still the case, or if it was anywhere else but here in my state, there was a new law that was passed that restricted compounding pharmacies from combining controlled substances that were already available. Ex: Hycodan- Hydrocodone/Hydromorphine. It's suppose to cut down on severe errors. (See People v. Stewart) I don't know if that is still the case. Just wanted to give you a heads up!

Thanks. Torbutol is a partial opioid antagonist called butorphanol or brand name Stadol. What I read about it says it has powerful antitussive properties (alleviates cough)
Unfortunately, my dog has a heart problem. His mitral valve is failing so his right atrium has enlarged and is pushing on his trachea activating his cough reflex. He also has an arrhythmia and his heart isn't pumping efficiently so pressure backs up in the pulmonary system causing fluid to build up in his lungs. The hycodan has hydrocodone to help control the cough reflex and also homatropine, an anticholinergic that helps stop the fluid secretions in his lungs that also cause his cough. I don't think the Stadol will accomplish the same thing. He is on 5 medications to control his heart condition. After a few days on the meds, his cough stopped completely. It was only after I ran out and couldn't find anymore hycodan that his cough returned. I found a pharmacy that carries a hydrocodone/homotropine syrup and his cough is disappearing again. I'm familiar with butorphanol (torbutol) and may mention it to the vet, but the hycodan has been so effective and hydrocodone is a pretty safe medication that I don't want to upset the apple cart. I just want my boy comfortable as his heart valve cannot be repaired. Hopefully I've gained 9 months to a year or two with him and will give him what he needs to be comfortable until the condition gets too bad and makes him suffer. I already dropped over $1200 to take him to see a doggie cardiologist and internal medicine specialist. I would think they know which medications are best for his condition. Thank you though. I may try it if they say it would be effective

PLEASE SEE MY REPLY TO THIS ON NOV. 10TH!!! There you will have all the info you need. It doesn't get any easier than this and Torbutol is TEN times BETTER than the Hycodan with the Hydrocodone in it for COUGH. IF this is what you're trying to treat, then BELIEVE ME PLEASE and give the Torbutol a try. It cough stops immediately. Your vet just needs to call in the dosage info to the pharmacy I've given the info to in my previous post. It's called Roadrunner Pharmacy and it's in Arizona I think if my mind isn't playing with me! Lol. They are awesome and they even send your baby a little stuffed toy each time you fill something from them.. They specialize in compounding meds for animals and are very good. They can even overnight it to you if you need it really bad right now and in the future you just need to call in a refill at least a week ahead of time to get it on time. Make sure the vet puts several refills on it too BTW!!! So as not to have to go thru all this every month! It's easy as pie the medicine works so much better for this type of cough in dogs than the Hycodan stuff everyone is trying to get and or risking their dogs life giving them medications for humans without knowing the correct dosage etc etc etc. It's sooooooo easy! PLEASE INFORM YOUR VETS ABOUT THIS.... although I honestly can't imagine any vet NOT knowing about this? I hope many will see this second post about this??!!

Depends what it is for. Its an opioid pain reliever but may be compounded with homatropine, an anticholinergic that helps with a cough.
I don't see why oxycodone wouldn't work for pain. Most pharmacies carry hydrocodone but it is mixed with acetaminophen (tylenol) which is bad for dogs (brand name vicodin) That's why vets use the homatropine mix and its rare that pharmacies carry it.
There are many options for pain so it really depends on the condition you are treating.

I was able to find a medication that came in a good sized capsule. I pulled the capsule open, dumped out the med that was in it, wiped it out with q-tip and filled the capsule with as much syrup as I could. I put the capsule back together and was able to get my boy to take the capsule with food. It took 3 of them to make a dose but it worked. Don't spill any syrup on the outside or your dog will smell it. Also, the capsule will start dissolving pretty quickly in contact with a liquid syrup, so you have only five or ten minutes to get it in your dog's tummy before it leaks.
Some vitamin pills come in decent size capsules, so that's a good place to look.

Also, there is a pet hospital chain called Blue Pearl. If you are near one if them, they have no problem getting Huffman for canines.

There is a medicine called Torbutol. It's much better than the Hycodan for a cough in dogs. However your vet will need to call to have it compounded. There are many pharmacies that do compounding, they'll just need to find one. There is one that mails it to you that my vet uses. It's called Roadrunner Pharmacy. This is the phone number. 1-877-518-4589. Your vet can contact them and ask one of the pharmacists what they need exactly and they'll give them all the info. My dog takes it and it works beautifully. However a word of warning and PLEASE take this VERY serious. On the first dose PLEASE only give about HALF of the amount prescribed just in case. I think it is quite strong and if the dog isn't used to it, which obv it's not, it can REALLY do a number on the poor baby. I thought I had killed my dog the first time! I gave the amount ordered and he was out in space somewhere. His eyes were glazed looking and fixed. His breathing was fast and very shallow.. Oh I was hysterical I was sooooooo scared. I just started trying to rustle him up, rubbing on him and shaking him, calling him etc etc and he came out of it. So I'm just telling you this as a "just in case" and not to scare you as the medicine works wonderful. I'm just saying to START LOW ON DOSAGE AND ADJUST FROM THERE!!! To this day in fact, I STILL DO NOT give my dog the dose ordered which is .25ml. All I give him is from .10 to .15ml and it works great. So no need to give so much if you don't have to. BTW, my dog weighs 10lbs. Well I hope this will help many many people out there dealing with this very problem. Good luck.

We have a pom with a collapsing trachea also. We are having a terrible time finding the hydrocodone homatropine. Believe me, we have called walgreens, walmart, cvs. Our vet isn't able to get it. We found a cvs in Merrillville, IN that almost had the amount we needed and they gave us all they had. We took him to Purdue Lafayette Vet which is very specialized. They said he is not a good candidate for the surgery because he is diabetic, overweight and 9 years old. To us that is not old. We have tried for years to help him lose weight, walks, lowfat food and treats. We have 3 other dogs who are not over weight . Anyway, we are having a terrible time finding the med. I will try costco, I pray they have it. Thank you all. It helps to see others trying to find answers also.
