Muscle/nerve Ache With Eliquis And Niacin Or Statin (Page 10)

Updated

Since starting Eliquis, I have felt much stiffer and sore in the mornings and during the day with muscle tightness in my neck and back affecting my upper arms. A general sense of early aging that is unpleasant. Anyone else with these symptoms?

Dear "M", so happy to hear that you are doing much better with Xerelto than you were with Eliquis. That is totally consistent with my experience. So hopefully this will continue for you. Yes, they are similar in action, but clearly the Xerelto was much better for me also. This is complex stuff. I am still doing very nicely with 5 mg of Coumadin, but thinking of going NATURAL soon......like Jazzy. Feel almost 100% since my switch to Coumadin almost 5 months ago. Running 12 miles per week (4 MPH) with full energy and no muscle pain or anything else.

I feel as if my muscle power has been compromised and were it not for my will power and grit I would not get from A to B. I watched a girl on TV who had been born with cerebral palsy trying to live an active life with a zimmer and she seemed to suffer from the same pain as I do on Apixaban. At her work she had to take time out to stretch and exercise her muscles to help stop them from going into spasm. I did have a similar feeling in my muscles when I was pregnant with my son; also when I had a fall on my back and suffered fibromyalgia symptoms where lots of muscles in my body were affected.

I’m switching to Xarelto from Eliquis. I felt like I had MS on Eliquis. I couldn’t even walk into the stables to see my horse without sitting. One week off and I feel like a million bucks. Now I have to go on this other Xarelto. I had an ablation and it was successful. I confused why I have to take this crap. I’m praying it doesn’t cause me problems. Any thoughts?

Glad to hear you are feeling better. Hopefully the Xerelto will do much better for you. Yes, the doctors are conservative, and even when you have a successful ablation, they likely will continue patients on a blood thinner. That is what they subscribe to, and truthfully, they just do not want to see patients have a stroke. Everyone is unique, so I recommend that you have an in-depth discussion with your doc on this topic. You may change his or her mind, but I doubt it. That is reality.

Re: David (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

One of the first and most prevalent side effects I encountered with Eliquis was shoulder and neck muscle tightness. This led to balance problems for me. I felt terrible. It also caused some mental fogginess for me. My leg muscles got so weak that I could not do my treadmill workouts. Normally, I brisk walked and jogged at about 4.0 MPH and 1 to 1.5% incline for about one hour, 3 times a week. On Eliquis, I was not able to do anything. I was MISERABLE. I am age 77, and have done the treadmill for 40 years. I switched to Coumadin, and now I am back to my old and VIBRANT self. No more of these "new" and tempting anti-coagulants for me. I NOW FEEL GREAT on Coumadin.

My advice is to be patient here. I takes more than a few days to get back to NORMAL. It took me about 2 weeks to see results. You may see sooner, but don't count on it. If this continues, go see your doctor. Just my opinion here.

OMG, I just wanna cry b/c I'm so glad I found this site via a fellow facebook Eliquis researcher with the same symptoms. THANK YOU. My hematologist actually believes me that the symptoms are linked in my case though it's not a common side effect, but it's validating to see HOW SIMILAR some of these responses are.

For example, I developed a case of plantar fasciitis JUST FROM CHANGING MY SHOES. I even broke in the new very high quality pair gently, but went on a long walk and came back with plantar fasciitis which has only just now gone away, nine months later.

In the meantime I've developed plenty of aches and pains from doing almost nothing — for example I rolled over in bed, pulled a tiny muscle in the lower left back, and have been in agony from it for SIX MONTHS. This week I've been in tears b/c my right arm is like a sheet of fire, hurts so much and I've done nothing. Hard to sleep — lots of you are reporting pain-related sleep problems.

Like Wade, I feel like it might be potassium-related. I did also notice that it got MUCH worse when I took a magnesium supplement, and wonder if my multi-vitamin is conflicting with the Eliquis?

HOW MANY OF YOU WITH THESE SYMPTOMS TAKE MULTIVITAMINS? (Particularly multi-vitamins with magnesium?) I'm considering trying going off the multivitamin which I've been on for years to see if it helps.

I DO feel like it's aging me, like you-all. I'm only 40 and I feel 80.

I'm really envious of people who have no side-effects on this medicine.

It's too bad, because Eliquis is so much better for me than Xarelto, which caused heavy menstrual bleeding and a weird metallic fatigue, and Warfarin doesn't work at all for me (I'm resistant to rat poison, apparently). And the lovenox inj's. are painful and cause knotting and bruising. I suppose I could try pradaxa, or go back on inj's., but first step will be to try eliminating the multivitamin. I'll let you know if it helps.

Yes and gained 50 lbs of water the first year then pain in my arms, numbness the last most miserable years of my life. I am 84. Blood pressure would drop very low, had seizures, etc etc. life became unbearable when I had serious breathing problems, I want off this poison. nit's ruined my life. Normally I am a very active person.

Hi everyone! Well, I tried going off the multivitamins as promised below and unfortunately it didn't seem to help. I went to the doc, we're going to try reducing from 5mg 2x a day to the lower dose. Apparently there are new studies suggesting the lower dose may be just as efficacious for maintenance at the lower dose, as long as you're on the higher dose for at least six months after a major clotting event. I'm hoping reducing the dose will allow my body's natural anti-inflammatory systems to kick in so I won't be in as much pain. I miss dancing.

Many that have been on here have. I felt like I had MS. I could only walk a short distance then sit. My arms got weaker and I think it effected my breathing as well. I had itchiness all over and just exhausted and in a haze. I got off of it and 6 days later I had muscles again, no itches and like the sun came out. No haziness. Go to another one. Horrible drug.

Re: Jackson (# 190) Expand Referenced Message

Sounds pretty much like the experience I had with Eliquis. It almost did me in, and also affected my breathing, I just wonder if we are exceptions, or if this is more common than being currently reported. The manufacturer does mention muscle weakness, but nothing about the fogginess. Keep in mind that serious drug reactions are rarely reported by doctors. So for every report you see, there are likely 50 more than recorded. THAT IS A FACT, and FDA is aware of this under-reporting.

I wondered if anyone has considered a legal suit? This destroyed 1 1/2 years of my life plus my career in real estate. I couldn’t even walk into a house and show it.

If you feel that you have been irreversibly injured from this drug, I would consult a reputable drug injury lawyer. Also, talk with your doctor about what this drug may have done to your body. You must have some type of medical diagnosis or explanation from your doctor. The situation with doctors is that they are very concerned about litigation against them, so this is tricky. My opinion is that the doctor is not legally liable here, since this is an FDA-approved drug. Just my two cents worth here. I wish you the best, and hopefully healing of this issue.

Yes, with numbness in both arms and hands and hands have swollen and are so sore it hurts to open the refrigerator, I can only sleep 4 hours max at a time, if I go over that the stiffness and aches are almost unbearable. This just started right after the first of the year.

Re: ktorch (# 194) Expand Referenced Message

Yes, the muscle weakness is a big issue with Eliquis. But the manufacturer tends to downplay this. With their TV ads they are very SNEAKY. They use a voice on almost all the side effects....except for muscle weakness. They put this in fine print toward the end of the commercials. These ads are TERRIBLE. They point out all the "benefits" and downplay the side effects. As for my progress since I am off that terrible Eliquis, I continue to do well on 5 mg. of Coumadin. I can run forever on the treadmill, and have plenty of energy. There are a few things with Coumadin, but nothing like Eliquis. So my vote is to go on Coumadin. I am trying to get off everything, however. Hopefully soon when I have a cardioversion.

If your experience is like mine with Eliquis, you may be pleasantly surprised how much better you will feel with the Coumadin. Coumadin still has some side effects, as do all the blood thinners.....period. But all I can say is that my muscle weakness and fogginess are GONE since switching to Coumadin. Don't know why this happens with Eliquis for some folks.....remains a mystery to me.

I had a second back surgery 1.5 yrs ago and had a blood clot which was not discovered until a month after surgery. Put me on Eliquis! Also have fibro! Have had worse pain ever since was put on Eliquis. Doctor doesn’t think pain is a side effect. Also was put on potassium and metoprolol for atrial fib. Hard to know if or what could be making pain worse. Frustrating! Has 6 injections in back recently for pain. Doctor told me exercise was best thing for pain. They really don’t understand! More frustration! I really don’t know how you figure it out!

I reported on this blog several months ago that I had severe muscle aches and suspected Eliquis. After several months, the soreness in my knee went away. Then about 4 months later I developed a severe ache in my pelvic/hip area. After x-rays and MRI, doctor thought it was inflammation around the hip joint due to osteoporosis. Now after about 6 weeks when I could hardly walk, the pain is going away. I have wondered if we could be getting bad batches of Eliquis. I even had the pharmacy call and ask what color my Eliquis pills were???? I hesitate to go back on Coumidin as I reacted so severely to that and they were never able to get my level regulated. Any suggestions?
