More Alert/focused

Updated

I started taking phendimetrazine to lose weight after my hysterectomy. Although it suppressed my appetite, it also made me mentally more alert and able to focus. I have since been diagnosed with ADD; my PCP prescribed Adderall XL for this diagnosis. The Adderall is not having the same effect as the Phendimetrazine. I find myself daydreaming, less focused, and having some shortness of breath. Is there a medication for ADD that is closely related to Phendimetrazine?

Be careful. It's too closely connected in your thinking. Could the weight loss medication have possibly caused the ADD? I suspect, however I know nothing about the side effects. Look closer into cause and effect. You're now into possibly psychotropic drugs prescribed by psychiatrists. Some mental and emotional damage is quite serious. Hope you've considered seeing appropriate healt care professionals. . . Rule out first any lesions or structural brain/nerve damage. Make sure your doctors get the extensive tests to rule out the possible damage. Insist on MRIs or PET scans, EKGs etc. The testing will set your mind at ease later on. Then you can concentrate on an appripriate treatment plan with any physician.

Also the best doctor is yourself. If you haven't, get on the computer and research the drugs, symptons.
Always when you have any tests, have the nurse or receptionist request a copy to patient, always for your own records.

Try not to worry. It may be something really simple that the doctors and you can figure out together. Excessive worry will lock your long term memory and impair your short-term capabilities as well.

Be very patient with yourself and the illness and the process. Some medical problems don't show up, early on, for diagnosis. It may take a while, so PEACE BE STILL. Maybe the illness will lead to a greater understanding of yourself and teach you more than you ever more of life's answers. Look at this from a positive perspective and try to self-talk that this is a beautiful opportunity to study, rest, gain skills -a- challenge, not an obstacle or problem.
Love and best wishes for a speedy healing. Myra

Actually, the likely reason you aren't getting any results from the Adderall is due to the fact that you have already been taking Phendimetrazine, which is very similar to Amphetamines, which is what Adderall is. So your body is already used to the effects.

If your doctor gave you an equivelent or lower dose of Adderall, when you are used to the amount of Phendimetrazine you were taking, then it will seem like you aren't taking anything.

If the dose is lower and you stop taking the Phendimetrazine, then you will likely experience withdrawal effects.

Your body adjusts to anything that you ingest on a regular basis, be it a morning cup of coffee or a diet soda with lunch and as long as you continue ingesting the same amounts, then you won't feel any effects any longer, even if one day you drink a different brand of coffee or soda, because the amounts and substances in them are so similar.

The same thing occurs if someone is taking narcotics for pain and their doctor suddenly prescribes them something else, but fails to make sure that it is a higher dose. If the dose is the same, they won't feel any change and if the dose is too low, they will go into withdrawal.

So, since these two drugs are so closely related in their chemical make-up and the way they act in the body, it is not surprising that you feel no effects from the Adderall, especially if the dose is lower than what you were taking of the Phendimetrazine.

I also wanted to add that NEITHER of these drugs are Psychotropics!

Thank you for your comments. I have researched the two medications unsuccessfully. The phendimentrazine doesn't cause any shortness of breath, chest tightness, day dreaming, etc. Also, I have mitral valve prolapse to factor in. I am going to suggest maybe a nonstimulant ADD med. My PCP initially started me on Adderall because she said adults respond better to it.
