Missouri Pain Dr For Son In Wheelchair

I just moved to stella MO near Joplin, i dont know the area well, but my oldest son has MD and spinal rods put in his back, he has been in a wheelchair since 3 years old, he is grown now, but i dont know where to take him, he is on lortab, soma and xanax along with many other non narcotics pills. Does anyone know where i can take him and they will not treat him like a pill head, and that would take his insurance, he is on SSI Thanks a worried mom

Put, Missouri HealthNet Provider Search, in your search bar. Be sure to call and verify that a dr does accept medicaid. You also need to contact your sons Health Plan and be sure that the dr is on their plan. There is no guarantee that another dr will treat him with the same meds as his last dr. The new dr should also get a copy of his medical records from his previous dr. There may be things that your son has to pay for, depending on what Missouri Medicaid covers.
Beginning October 6, 2014 Lortab will become a Schedule II med. That means that it can't be called in and he can't get refills. He also must see the dr at least once every 90 days. Under Federal Law, a dr can write 3-30 day rxs at one time, but few drs do this.

have you gotten him established with a pediatrician? I would think this would be the best, 1st step to take. Hopefully, they would be able to refer you somewhere.

Don't wait until he meds run out. I may or may not be difficult finding a dr who will prescribe the same meds he has been on. The health plan will also have to approve it.

About him being treated like a pill head. That will depend on the dr, the severity of his health and the type of medical documentation that a dr may require. One would think under the circumstances, getting the meds he is use to taking wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, he has moved, Missouri has a high rate of abuse and Medicaid Providers in every state are penalized if they write a high number of prescriptions for pain and certain other meds due to the high rate of abuse and diversion in the Medicaid program.
