Your prescription should tell you how often to take it, and you should not take it more often than that without checking with your physician.

Methadone is a very good pain relieving medication. I have been taking Methadone for 11 years and it has enabled me to enjoy some quality of life I would not have had otherwise. Methadone is a naturally long acting medication because it takes several passes through the liver to be broken down. So it stays in the blood-stream a long time compared to other pain medications. For chronic pain most doctors prescribe it to be taken every 8 hours but like zippysgoddess said, take it as your doctor prescribed! I take 40mg every 6 hours. Most medications are converted during the first pass through the liver and peak within about 3 hours. That's why they develop time release like Oxycontin and Kadian. Methadone has a peak of about 14 hours because it takes several passes to be converted. Addicts who are given Methadone are usually given one dose a day because it is so long acting they get the benefit needed. Chronic pain is a whole different situation but taking as prescribed should give you a steady and stable reduction in pain?

I was going to skip this but... Stairs don't kill people, its the fall down them that does What can benefit many lives can take another. Some people can have a bad reaction to a medication but death is rare. If that was the case then you need to find out the details and pursue compensation. Medications as well as vitamins that are used to improve a persons life can cause damage and even kill when abused! Without the details its hard to respond any farther about your brother Shelby. I am sorry for your loss and trying to understand your pain from losing a sibling is not possible for me.

Thank you zippysgoddess. Its hard to remain objective sometimes. I sensed some aggravation in your response and I understand that because it has been very difficult finding pain doctors, getting meds that help me and dealing with so much pain all the same time. Then along with all of that I have to worry because people abuse medications that I count on to have any resemblance of a so called normal life. Many people don't understand the difference between dependence and addiction so they stereotype people suffering chronic pain as addicts, then spread their misinformation and make it even harder than it already is to get help. I don't want someone to have to hurt this badly for them to understand how scary it is to have so much pain and the fear of not having medication to ease it. However, I'm positive that a of week of chronic pain would enlighten the most ignorant and motivate them to learn about and understand the life improving benefits of narcotic pain relievers. As anyone with chronic pain knows a week is nothing compared to knowing the pain is going to be there every second for the rest of their life! Stay positive and continue to help others. Best wishes, Pelota4

I understand zippysgoddess. Finding myself taking medications on a daily basis that I thought only got used in hospitals has been very hard to get used to. Knowing that I hurt so bad life would have very little meaning without strong narcotic pain medications is scary. I really don't know what would happen if I had to try and live without meds like Methadone, Oxycontin, Demerol or Dilaudid? I'm so very thankful that I have a good pain doctor and the medications he prescribes.

I and only I have to live with this pain and I accept that is my responsibility. That has made me much less tolerant on those who complain and blame. Pointing fingers, complaining and blaming helps no one. I guess that's why your response hit home with me? Instead of complaining and whining about your pain and all the reason's how its not fair and someone else is to blame, you fight through the pain and take time to help others. That is really huge! If you only help one person you have accomplished more than every single one of the self proclaimed victims put together and more than most people who don't hurt. That's taking responsibility and looking beyond yourself. I don't expect those who blame the pills, doctors, pill makers or pharmacists to understand how incredibly unselfish that is but it means a lot to me and I'm sure others with chronic pain who want to continue learning and improving their lives by taking responsibility for the direction their life is going? Stay strong and best wishes to you and your family as you all share the trying life ahead.

First I would like to say to Shelby that I am very sorry for your loss and can tell by the strong emotion, in your response above, that you cared deeply for your brother-in-law. However, as Petlota4 and Verwon have both stated... methadone and other strong narcotic/synthetic medications like them are a GodSend to the millions of us, across the world, wjo suffer daily from chronic pain, MS, RA etc. etc.

Much like Verwon, I most certainly never expected to be walking only limited distances, while using a cane and daily narcotic pain medication that in my younger days would have said was for wimps. This from someone who played footbalol until I was 23 and never made it through an entire season without breaking a bone or having surgery at the end of the season to clean-up this joint or that.

I hated pain meds then and I hate them now. The difference, today, is... I cannot function without them. At 43 and permanantly disabled, one would never know that I was once a great out-side linebacker and once weighed a healthy 245 llbs of near solid muscle. Instead what they see is a greying man who is barely able to push a shopping cart to buy groceries. Without my daily doses of morphine etc. (and I have tried) I am simply an adult male lying in a near fetal position with tears streaming from my eyes as the constant drone and stabbing of pain course throughout my lower body.

Believe it or not, any high I ever got, from any of the pain medications I now take, has long since lost its effect. The one and only reason that I take (and pay for these outrageously expensive medications) is so that I may try to play at least a small role in what most people call daily life.

Still,

Srchn4ansrs

Methadone didn't kill him, he killed himself. He was either double dosing (taking more than the amount prescribed for one day) or he was mixing drugs with his methadone.
If one takes their methadone seriously because they want to be rid of illicit drug use, and they take just their daily prescription of methadone, it WILL NOT KILL YOU. I'm sorry to say but your brother was doing something shady regarding his methadone.
And you say you want to get rid of methadone, so what do you propose for opiate addicts? That they just stay on their illegal opiates/opioids?
