Hello, John! How is your wife?

What type of doctor has she been consulting? Physicians really have no choice but to be extremely cautious about prescribing such medications and, due to the new regulations that were put in place last year, if strong narcotics are required on a long-term ongoing basis, then only a specialist can prescribe them.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Does she currently have a surgeon or PCP that may be able to refer her to someone else?

Can anyone suggest a good doctor in that area?

Verwon.....I have seen you write this many times and it just isn't true. Long term narcotics use for chronic pain does not require a pain management specialist to treat. If needed, your very own PCP can and many do prescribe narcotics for the long term. Pain management programs are not for everyone, they are very expensive and worthless if nothing the do there would help a patient. Not only that, but our PM programs run for 8 weeks and not for years and they are trying more and more to treat without the use of narcotics at all. They would rather do epidural steroid inj's., phys therapy, occu therapy, psych therapy, chakra cleansing ( no kidding there & I won't do that) and all while trying to get you off the pain meds by drastically reducing your dose or by not prescribing anything but antiinflams, Tylenol, lyrica/Neurontin for nerve pain, etc. They treat people with a "one size fits all" treatment here in Mn. I'm sorry, I am all for these treatments BUT I am also for the use of narcotics when needed. Not even pain meds are a one size fits all. Anyway...just thought I would correct some info you have been given. Btw, I'm not only a chronic pain patient but I am a nurse as well.....a medical professional!

Hi John. I know it has been a couple months since you wrote in but I wanted to share my experience with you. May 2008 I had my right SI joint fused. They tried so many combos of meds before they finally found one to work. It was MS Contin ( long acting morphine ) and Vicodin 5mg for breakthrough pain. For me it was a miracle combination. I can't remember the dose on the MS Contin but believe it was 15mg twice a day. Talk to her doctor.....this may work for her. If she can't take morphine, you didn't say what she has tried or what she can't take, either OxyContin or duragesic patch are both good options. I know they are strong meds but, in my professional opinion, a body cannot heal well if left in uncontrolled pain or if a person is unable to sleep....which I'm sure is probably one of her problems since the dilaudid isn't helping with the pain. I have never had a patient get very good results from oral dilaudid. That is my opinion, though.

Good luck and please let me know how she fares. In today's day and age it seems more difficult to get your pain decently controlled than it does to get something if you're an addict...you know what I mean? It's a damn shame, too! I will pray for the best for you and your wife!

I have chronic migraines daily and have had several operations the latest being the omega stimulator. While it helps some I'm still having the headaches 24/7. The Dr. Refuses to give daily pain meds because of the new laws and they believe should not need any longer. Wrong! I can not take anything with NSAIDS so Tylenol is it no help. Does anyone know any Drs. In Houston, Tx area that will prescribe pain meds? When I was taken the I was taken them twice daily.am and pm. Thanks in advance.
