Lyrica Loses Effect After I Eat

Updated

I have taken Neurontin at 800mg at 4 times a day for eight years. Also taken Lyrica at 200mg 4 times a day.It helps with pain and neasuea, before i eat and after i eat and it kills the effect of the medicine. So I have to take more than prescribed. So does any body else have this problem. Are any sugestions? I have talked to my doctors about this. They don't listen. They also didn't listen to me about it being adictive. I was right about that. So if anyone can help or tell me how to get help please, please write me back. Thank you.

The reason they do not see these as being addictive is because they are not actually pain medications, they are not narcotics, so they don't carry the same side effects and addiction as narcotic opiates do.

What you experience though, when you take any medication for a long period of time is actually considered Dependence. Your body just gets used to having that substance regularly, so if you abruptly stop taking it, you will experience some mild withdrawal effects, because then your body suddenly has to function once again without that substance.

Addiction occurs when someone takes more and more of a medication, because they like the effects they get from it, such as an energy boost of the high. Since these are just side effects, they eventually wear off, so they must take more and more in order to get those desired effects.

As to whether or not food should affect this medication, since they do not work like narcotics, this is not possible. These medications have a cumulative effect in the body, that is why it takes several weeks and up to a month for some people, for them to reach their therapeutic effects in the body and provide pain relief.

Thus, there aren't effects like narcotics that you should feel that food would suddenly stop you from feeling.

If you take your medication when you are supposed to, then if will be in your body either way, regardless of whether you eat or not, and then it is going to have its effect on you.

Food does not stop the absorption of it.

In fact, when foods do affect some medications, they usually cause MORE of the medication to be in your system, rather than less of it, so the effects of the medication are greater than when you take it without food.

Thus, what you are describing does not make any sense, that is why your doctors are not taking you seriously.

I could understand if you were taking narcotics and you were expecting the high effects that you got everytime you took them and then suddenly that effect was diminished because you took it with food, so you might think it isn't working, but like I said, these are NOT pain medications, so that isn't going to happen with these medications.

Hi all, u need to wait an atleast an hour after ingesting lyrica to eat. If ingested on an empty stomach u get 98% bioavailability which means 98% in ur blood stream. If taken with food, the food diminishes lyrical effect by 20-30% and this is all found on the lyrica official website

Hello. Just giving my two cents on this subject. I have been taking Lyrica for almost a year now. Food has never lowered the effects for me. I have fibromyalgia and one of my symptoms is zero appetite. Lyrica, since it's famous for weight gain, is really the only medication besides marijuana that gives me the desire to eat...and I've never felt less better after eating.
