I was prescribed oxycodone acetaminophen 5-325 for pain; another doctor told me to take 1000 mg of acetaminophen for the same pain. Which is stronger?

@Demetri,

Oxycodone in and of itself is significantly stronger than Acetaminophen, so I'm not sure if there's any reliable or honest way to accurately compare the two, outside of trying each one for yourself at different times in the day and noticing the big difference in pain relief. I'm not a Dr. but I also wouldn't encourage anyone to take such a large dose of Acetaminophen on a regular basis. They narrowed down the max dose in meds to 325mg for a good reason (to do with decreasing one's risk for liver damage/failure). So my thoughts are, even if 1000mgs of Acetaminophen helped your pain momentarily, it would seem unwise to remain on that high of a dosage for any length of time. If it were me, I would take what I was prescribed for pain, and if it doesn't help, then I'd try to seek other means of relief than Acetaminophen for the sake of maintaining my liver health. From my experience, natural remedies such as Turmeric are more effective than Acetaminophen for pain and are also recognized as being much safer in the long run. However, I'm sure there are a number of other alternatives as well that may be worth considering.

Hope this helps!

I had failed dental work that created an infection in my gum 8 days ago, Dentist fixed it 6 days ago. 5 days ago I developed the infection and was put on Amoxicillin 875 MG. yesterday I saw my Doctor because of pain, Dr called Dentist and agreed to put me on Augmentin 875 MG for 10 Days, and perscribed Oxycodone Acetaminophen N 5-325 MG. I did not take Oxy until 11 today, and I have been violently ill vomiting. How strong is this dose of Oxy? Do you think I'm allergic, or just had a bad reaction? How long will it take to get it out of my body, as I have an interview in 3 days?

Any dr. Telling you to take 1000 mg of acetaminophen is trying to kill you and you need to switch Drs immediately!! Research what high dosages and long term use of these dosages can do to you.. Good luck.

THAT COULD BE A DANGEROUS First of all, just how often are you supposed to take the Acetaminophen? It can be very dangerous for your liver if you take too much. Verify this on the internet or maybe with your pharmacist, but I just read the maximum a person weighing at least 150 lbs is 4000 mg, but if you take the maximum for an extended period of time, it could seriously damage your liver. In that case, it's suggested that you stay at 3000 mg or lower. AND DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL WITH IT, ESPECIALLY BEER FOR THE SAME REASON. I really hope you'll take this very seriously. Good luck!

Sorry, I didn't answer your actual question. The 325 on your percocet dose represents the amount of Acetaminophen in each tablet, so it depends how many percocets you are taking. Just remember if you're just taking the Acetaminophen, you won't have the benefit of the 5 mg of Oxycodone that's in each Percocet, and that could make a difference in its effectiveness.
