Being on opioids for pain is no fun at all. I've had seven surgery's for my left foot. It got an infection from ulcers and they had to remove several bones. Doc said there would be an 80% chance of me never walking again. I was wheelchair bound for 2 yrs. I didn't ask for any of that. I'm just upset at people that criticize us who are on drugs, like I wanted this. My doctor got me addicted to pills. I was on 90 mg of oxycodone ir... Every 6 hours. I was on that for 2 yrs and I had to get off of them. I did it myself ..It was not an easy task. I am now on 75 mcg of fentanyl patch every 72 hours. I just thought I'd add my thoughts on this post. Some of us didn't choose to be addicted to opioids. That was my doctor's doing. He prescribed them, not the man on the corner!!!

DO NOT chew these patches!!!! You could overdose right there!!! Don't play stupid games with these. Sounds to me like your an ADDICT instead of a Chronic Pain Patient! I know because I have a daughter that is an addict and it's a shame what has become of her. All her veins are either scared or collapsed. She has stolen from me and is no longer welcome in my home. She now inject ridalian!!! Junkies have taken away the rights of Chronic Pain Patients and SHAME on you!!!!

WTF - are you crazy??? DO NOT CHEW ON A PATCH UNTIL YOU WRITE YOUR OBIT FIRST!!! You defiantly don't know anything about opiates otherwise you wouldn't be asking such a stupid question. I agree with a lot of the comments about Chronic Pain Patients, like myself, and it's people like you that make it hard for us to get the meds we need to be able to live a somewhat pain free life and not just existing condition So write your obit and chew away cause someone is gonna find you dead!!!

Barry (# 20) --

Anyone who is considering taking their medication other than prescribed or is using them recreationally please reconsider. I have been on pain medication for 14 years now and it is a huge inconvenience in my life now that I am entering my retirement age and want to travel. I am burdened with the fact that I have to plan everything around my doctor's appointments and as the government is cracking down more thanks to the people who have misused the essential medication for those who have to have it to live a somewhat better life think twice about later on fighting addiction, it’s not a game. I would never take these medications by choice because they are not worth losing your freedom to live a normal life without being on a leash connected to a pm doctor.

These ppl that ABUSE Medication ( if YOU take a medicine OTHER than the way it is PRESCRIBED) get on my last nerve, and they are the MAIN PERSONS THAT SCREAM, " I am NOT a drug addict , I am no junkie" ( feeling YOUR pain DOC!!! )

‘NEVER EVER THINK THIS OKAY NO MATTER WHAT YOU HEAR!” I have been going through turmoil for a number of years due to thinking this was a quick fix good feeling I really needed from drug dependency. But.... this can cause fits as I have experienced and been diagnosed with epilepsy, my heart stopped and I needed CPR. Since that time I’ve been gutted beyond words that I even contemplated the thought to do this. Let me add I’m still on a rocky road back and was also severely addicted to tramadol. Do your homework everyone! You will be very surprised when you have woken from this stupor your in. I’m still fighting now today right now! Educate yourself!im a Dumas but at least I’m trying xxxx

I think that it's told like a joke and with sarcasm because it's so absurd that only a moron can think about that idiotic idea.

I have known of people chewing their fen patch but they cut them into 8 pics but remember cut & chew is not the scripted delivery method & would most likely cause losing your doctor .... I know this is old post but hope you are still alive and improving be well

I used to clip 50 mg patches into 5 equal strips and chew 1 a day
like gum ,I had no issues doing this, plus it took away any craving
and delivered a bit of a high.

I've read and listened to every post on this thread and I see both opinions as equally valid. With that being said, it is what it is and is unlikely to change. Dealers will always deal and it's human nature to be curious about drugs. Education is the key so people can make an informed choice before they even try drugs. it's interesting to note that nearly 10 years has passed since the original post. This shows one key point, that people will always find ways to abuse drug's no matter what! I am not advocating the use of Fentanyl in this manner, however people have and will continue to abuse drugs until the end of time so at least giving them some education makes it that much safer. If you're reading this and on the fence as to whether to do it or not, know this..... Abusing drugs of any kind will always lead to the same result.....a very unhappy and limited life!

With that being said and sticking to the original question that was asked which was, can you chew Fentanyl patches? The answer is yes, however there are pros and cons and the cons can potentially be FATAL so if you are hell bent on doing it at the very least do your research and follow these practices as a minimum:

1) make sure you are opiate tolerant. By this I mean have recently been taking strong opiates that are similar in strength to the amount of the patch you want to take.
2) calculate the dosage based on your tolerance and split the patch accordingly. This applies only to matrix patches since reservoir patches can release the entire dose when split! Do not split reservoir patches, it's seriously dangerous!
3) monitor yourself closely, especially the first time you do it or better still have someone else monitor your breathing and consciousness. Since fentanyl is one of strongest opiates available you have to immediately remove the patch from your mouth as soon as you feel like you are loosing control of your consciousness. This is obviously difficult if you're on your own. Try to get hold of some Naloxone should you feel you've taken in too much and removed the patch from your mouth. Ideally give it to the person who's monitoring you. Naloxone or "Narcan" knocks the opiate off the opioid receptors and will reverse the effects almost instantly reversing an overdose.

Be aware that it makes a difference where the patch is placed. since the bioavailability of transdermal patches when chewed is around 30% however if placed in a bucal cavity it's closer to 70%, This determinations how much you will absorb.

One of the advantages to oral routes of administration is that the drug will be released faster and means you don't have to wait 8-12 hours for pain relief. Please be aware that if you abuse fentynal patches in this way and manage to achieve the effects without respiratory depression, be aware that your tolerance will sky rocket immensely! Meaning if you do it again you will need a higher dose of the drug to achieve the same result. Be careful NOT to swallow the patch since you will have zero control over removing it. If you do swallow it, make yourself sick to get it back up. If you cannot do this, call emergency services immediately.

Think carefully and make an informed decision. I hope this has helped at least someone.
