Kadian is a time released Morphine tablet, also frequently prescribed as MS Contin, it is usually taken once or twice daily, depending on pain control.

That said, yes, the generic for this, a time released Morphine has been available for quite awhile.

Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and dry mouth.

FALSE. There is no generic Kadian at this time. I've been waiting on it to come out for more than a year.

Does anyone know if a generic Kadian is available yet? The patent expired in April 2010. Please let me know if you have any positive info!

I applied for the patient assistant program 20 days ago for Kadian. I just got the reply. It states that the program is no longer available as Kadian is now available in generic form. It was released November 10th, 2011 so should be hitting the phramacies anyday. I called my pharmacy, Costco, and they do not have it yet and do not know the name if will come under. Hopefully sooooon!!

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. WPI +1.83% today announced that it has received approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for morphine sulfate extended-release capsules USP, the generic equivalent of Actavis' Kadian®. Watson began shipping the product today. Kadian® is indicated to manage moderate to severe pain that continues around-the-clock and is expected to last for an extended period of time. Today is November 25th, 2011 so here is the proof that Watson bought out Actavis and will soon have a cheaper Kadian. Whew...thank goodness!

thank you BABY JESUS
I have been waiting for 7 years for a generic Kadian.
I had serious perm injury, Kadian is my savior with no adverse side effects. The problem was the cost of $700 month without Insurance and with insurance a $50 copay.
This last year I found out about patient assistance program. But In the past had suffered so much financial hardship doing without other needs to pay for my medicine.
This will help so many others that I know are in the same boat \with serious health problems and suffering to pay for much needed medicine/

Well, no one can afford to buy Kadian , my script was almost $700 month, I had health insurance for a while and thought the $50 copay was bad enough. once I lost my health insurance just like millions of other folks. No way could I pay $700.month for 1 medicine. the patients that take Kadian have serious health issues and other medicines and Doctor bills. It is just not reasonable for the average person to pay that amount.
Would you like to pay a $700 for a a gallon of milk?

I just checked the local Pharm, They have to order it special and the cost of the generic is almost as high as brand name only about 25% less and no discount with the Pharmacy discount cards (for folks that have no insurance). The pharmacist was shocked at the generic price said it should be added to discount card in near future. But still how can generic cost be so high???

How can the cost be so high you ask.... GREED!

Yes, Watson has to make their 250 million before they will lower the prices!!! Sucks in my opinion, I went to Kadian to get a free script, which they advertized, and all the trouble of days of running down taxes, doctor ok's etc., they sent me back a form 2 weeks later saying that Kadian has gone generic so no more program! Geez, update the site! So I call the pharm at Walgreens, they are wanting $797 for 30 day supply of 200 mg. It was $1,200. Then it was still in their warehouse! So forget that!

This situation is so unfair. Now, there is no Patient Assistance Program for any oral morphine product that I know of. I just dropped my very expensive health insurance only because I knew I could get on the PAP. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is in this position. Who can afford $800 a month for medication especially if youre not working. This is crazy. Even discounted, the generic Kadian is not affordable. Now what am I supposed to do - withdrawal I guess. This sucks!

The problem is the capsule form. I talked with my pharmacist about this. Generic morphine sulfate extended release in capsule form is very expensive. Tablets (MS Contin) on the other hand are less expensive, $600 or so (generai capsule) versus $150 (general tablet). If anyone has more information, please share as I see my doctor next week and need all the information I can get.

Kadian has a generic alternative: it's morphine suis er caps. Most pharmacies don't have them yet, I just picked up a "script" of Kadian and the price jumped from $20 to $80! When I called my insurance company they said the increase was due to there being a generic Kadian. I called my pharmacy and they were going to order some for my next month supply. For you people without insurance the pharmacy said the generic price was not a big drop from the name brand.

I contacted Rite Aid today and they told me that a generic for Kadian is now available according to their system and will be ordering it for me. Yay! No more huge co pay. Just a slightly less huge co pay! :(

There are two companies with a generic Kadian: Actavis (which makes the brand name) and Watson. My copay for the generic is the same as the brand name. One big difference: the $50 discount card made the brand cheaper. This is not a savings. Tablet form of sustained release morphine is not equivalent to Kadian. The mechanism for the sustained release is different so it can not be dispensed as a generic for Kadian. Losing my insurance. Now it's on to methadone.

Jake: Tablet or capsule, they are both extended release morphine sulfate. I don't understand what you are saying about them being different. My doc told me that the tablet form starts releasing the medication more quickly than the capsule form. As I said before, I talked with my pharmacist about this. When I saw my doctor, he prescribed MS Contin (generic). With my discount card, it cost me $75 for a one month supply. Yes, this is a bit of a hardship compared to being on the PAP but a whole lot better than generic Kadian for $600.

I just received my wife's prescription for Kadian 20 mg from the Mail order pharmacy. We were shocked to see morphine ER capsule 20 mg on the receipt. Didn't know there was a generic version out. Thanks for confirming the information.

She takes two tablets a day, and she had a prescription was for 180 capsules. We were charged $40 for the three month supply. Generics normally cost $20 on our insurance plan. So I guess there's still some special handling on.

Hopefully you will see relief soon at retial stores.

I had been on the Actavis (previously Alpharma) Patient Assistance Program for almost 7 years. November 15 I received a letter informing me that November 10 the FDA gave permission for Kadian to be available as a generic, and that the Actavis Patient Assistance Program would end as of December 31, 2011.

I was able to get one last month of Kadian before their programs was over. I had to get Medicare Part D insurance, which I will be penalized for not taking Part D when it was first offered. Next month when I go to my pain clinic we will discussing what alternatives there might be for me.

I did write to Actavis thanking them for having the PAP but thought that it was so very unfair to give only a 45 day notice that the PAP was stopping. I told them that they should have at least given a 3 month window, it didn't do me any good because I did not get a response, only my last script of Kadian.

This is a reply to a very old post about generic Kadian. It is available and I've used it for several years, but it's becoming very hard to get at pharmacies. They carried the MS Contin version which is a tablet. Kadian is a capsule with timed release pellets in it. Works better for me than the pill version. The pharmacy told me that even the generic version is very expensive for the pharmacy to buy. About $400 for 60 of the 100 mg tablets. If you have insurance and it covers generics it may only cost $10 as in my case.

I feel like I could have written the comments you posted! I'm going through the exact same struggles with generic Kadian. For a few years I was able to fill it at my local pharmacy, using my Blue Cross insurance with the $10 co-pay. Without warning, they tell me that my insurance company reimburses them for only about 75% of what they must pay for the drug. So of course they aren't going to sell the drug and take a huge hit -since they would be losing a couple of hundred dollars. I took the prescription to a CVS, where they assured me they had the medicine in stock. When I picked it up, it was morphine extended release tablets – not the capsules with the extended release pellets that my doctor had specified on the prescription. I have tried the tablets in the past and they simply do not work as well as the extended release capsule version. So I called Walgreens and they said I have to bring the prescription in to them in person, so they can run it through to make sure it's covered by insurance. They said there would be a $10 co-pay for it and yes it's covered. The pharmacist confirmed that Kadian generic is a capsule, not a tablet.

I called Walgreens tonight to check if the prescription was ready, got the automated system, and was informed that my prescription will be $840!!! As you said, I have been skipping a few doses and taking break-through meds instead, so that I don't run out of medicine before I can solve this fiasco. It's becoming a nightmare to simply fill my prescription. With fibromyalgia and major fatigue and pain, this is the last hassle I need to have to deal with every month.

Tee tee generic kadian is by far the best for my low back pain and I have 7 separate conditions not including each herniated disc. And for 120 of the 100mg my insurance had to pay over 2400$. LIKE WHAT THE HELL!!!! It works so well for my back pain, even better than fentanyl but I don't know what the price is going to do to my insurance premium..... I'm pissed. I finally found something that really helps my back pain and I am probably going to have to stop taking it because of its price. I have insurance but I know they won't be happy about paying over 2k for one med. But the medicine is great.

The company is putting the exact pill in a bottle labeled with it's generic name. It even says Kadian on it. I am convinced that they did this to get rid of their free program for people who couldn't afford it. I was on that program and went through quite a mess being accepted and then within a day told that the program was being discontinued because it was now available in generic form. The price is still high and it kicks me into the Medicare coverage gap in just a few months. Still, it's the only one that works for me.

I need some help. I have been on Morphine sulfate er for about 4 years. I take 100mg. 3x a day. If it weren't for this I couldn't move, it also got me off about 30-40 norco a day! Now I take Morphine 100mg in the morning with one norco 10/325mg and I take the same around 5:00 and that's it. Once in a while when I hurt bad I will wake up and take a morphine in middle of night. Anyway, they started raising prices on me and I pay around $350 a month for my morphine. I have called all the pharmacies in the area and they are all around the same and they all say it will continue to go up every month. I don't know what to do, I have no income and awaiting social security, and no insurance. I am severely stressed just waiting for my next prescription on 20th and don't know how I am going to pay for it. Any ideas? I live in Oregon.

I'm not going to go into a long post. I simply want to state that I too was on Kadian and a stable breakthrough med dose for years. The change of insurance and "generic" availability caused me to have a similar situation/read nightmare! The difference between the Kadian and the Watson generic- horror show! I also was able to compare the same dose side by side and found these SAME results. Less pellets-imperfect in size and shape and easily 20% less if not more! I was fortunate enough to be placed back on Kadian NAME BRAND ONLY. Now we just have to deal with the DEA and the proposed legislation to limit ALL PATIENTS TO 100MG morphine or the bio equal per day. I have been able to make positive lifestyle advances in the face of a degenerative diagnosis with multiple treatment approach. Removing medication nul and voids everything else-as I learned recently. Again-thank you for your detailed information- my results back up your experience.

@PAPnomore. Have you ever used Kadian? I have. Yes they are both Morphine, however there IS a big difference. Kadian lasts longer and works much better. I don't know why this is but for me the above is true and I'm sure others would agree. I tried MS Contin before and it doesn't come close to Kadian. I think it works better because of the way its made. Somehow the pellets inside have a much better effect. Avinza is very similar with the added effect of releasing some of its contents faster. It also is a capsule with pellets in it. The downside is, it doesn't come in as many different dosages as Kadian.
