The underlying difference between ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is that D2 is a synthetic lab version and D3 is a product of nature (i.e. produced by our skin when we're exposed to sunlight or via supplements derived from a microorganism like *lichen* that produces D3). Furthermore, studies proposed by Dr. Fuhrman indicate that D3 is of higher quality than D2 due to it being more biologically active.

You had also mentioned that you're trying to find an ingredient difference between vitamin D2 prescriptions vs OTC meds... By that, are you simply referring to OTC versions of D2 and D3? If so, my understanding is that the only differences outside of possible discrepancies in the dosage may be found in the list of inactive ingredients. However the only way to know for certain if there truly are any differences, would be to determine what all the ingredients are that are composed in the prescription version...You'd also need to know which OTC brand of D2 or D3 you are comparing it to, as there are literally hundreds to chose from, if not more.
