Hydroxyzine Why Prescribed?

I have a bottle of HYDGROXYZ PAM 25MG and the pharmacist has written Take 1 capsule every 6 hours as needed for pain. I got this from a PA a week after having surgery on my shoulder. So, I'm confused as why it says on here not for pain.

No, this medication is an antihistamine that is most commonly used to treat allergic reactions and for its sedative like effects that can help with anxiety. I've never heard of it being prescribed for pain. Even when used for anesthesia, sometimes, it is combined with other medications, not used alone. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth.

I wonder if there was some mix up and they meant to prescribe Hydrocodone, which is a narcotic analgesic?

It is proven to help pain medication work better. I take it with my percocet and it makes it feel.much stronger. I had ankle surgery and my podiatrist said he usually gives this medication along with a pain meds because it makes the pain meds work better.

Folks,

Chemically speaking this compound is an antihistamine. When prescribed in combination with opiates/opioids it indeed produces a potentiating effect while relieving nausea, itching and other adverse effects commonly seen with the use of these powerful pain rxs.
For many years the classic go to cocktail of Demerol and vistaril was the preferred in patient pain relieving protocol but when this agent is prescribed alone it produces little to no pain relieving properties. Any licensed medical provider that would ever prescribe this drug ALONE post operatively should have his license revoked. The theory behind using this drug in combination with Percocet is to limit the oxycodone dosage and quantity for out patient pain relief as it does clinically reduce the need for higher amounts of oxycodone or meperidine needed to produce measurable analgesia.

Instead of asking a group of people who have no more medical knowledge than you, why don't you ask your doctor? He could have prescribed it for pain due to nerve damage. Anyone who knows about Vistaril would know that it works by calming the central nervous system, there-by reducing the pain caused by nerve damage (which can cause pain impulses to be sent to certain parts of the body).
