Yes, Hydrocodone + Acetaminophen (APAP) is very addictive. Many people suffer addiction problems from this. A common brand name of this drug is Vicodin.

As with any prescription drug, keep your doctor informed of any and all side effects. More common side effects may include dry mouth, itching, pinpoint pupils, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, confusion, gas / heartburn, or flushed skin. If you experience irregular heartbeat or chest pain, difficulty breathing, wheezing, unusual weakness, cold / clammy skin, severe rash, fever, chills, or muscle aches and pains then notify your physician or prescriber ASAP! Also note that elderly patients have a higher likelihood of side effects.

To get oneself addicted, a person has to be abusing the med in question, most people end up doing this because they enjoy the high and/or euphoric effect that they get from some narcotics, since this is just a side-effect, these conditions eventually wear off, as their body adjusts to the med.

As a result of enjoying those experiences, many people start taking more than prescribed, or they start taking it more often than prescribed. Of course, you can see how this turns into a never-ending cycle, since once again, after a certain period of time, their bodies adjust to the med and they once again have to up their dosage to get the feelins they like from the drug in question. Of course, since a doctor only prescribes so much, they start to run out earlier and earlier, and must come up with other creative ways to obtain their supply so they can enjoy their next fix.

It is this type of abuse that causes the severe withdrawal effects that your family member sees from those she works with. When someone is on such a high dosage of opiates or Benzodiazepines and they have to stop taking it abruptly, the withdrawals can potentially be life threatening.

Dealing with Methadone patients, she only see the worst of the worse who are out of other options.

However, what she should have told you, as well, was that their is a significant difference between addiction and dependence.

I, for instance, am what the doctor's consider dependent. I take narcotics, and will more than likely have to do so, for the rest of my life due to a medical condition that is degenerating and causing chronic pain. However, when you are dependent on a drug, it just means that you need to take it regularly all the time, if you run out or say you next doctor's appointment for refills is a few days later than normal so you ran out of pills, you can experience some withdrawal, but the effects are usually very minor and it takes quite awhile, usually at least 24 hours or more, before these effects happen.

So basically, dependence means you take the meds as prescribed, or as with many of us, we hate using them at all, so we try to only take them when we have no other options, so this site doesn't double up our dosage, we aren't abusing them, so this site doesn't run out early, and this is a very far cry from addicted.

So even if you took them as prescribed, every day, all day, you would still not be considered addicted, you would be classified as dependent.

However, as you said, you don't take them unless you really need them and have exhausted your other options, so you would not be expected to be either addicted or dependent, that is why you were able to stop taking them for a month with no adverse effects.

You simply aren't taking them often enough for your body to become used to having them.

Dependence is a very minor issue, your body can become dependent on anything you take regularly for a long period of time, anything from a daily aspirin to help your heart or your afternoon glass of orange juice, and if you stop abruptly, after you body has been used to having it for so long, you will experience some effects, because your body has to readjust to not having that suddenly missing substance.
