i have taken both within the last couple of months… i wouldn't say they are "equivalent" or use the word "equal" per se - but in my experience, they are interchangeable, & the doctor who prescribed both of them had prescribed 30mg of oxycodone and 30mg of morphine…. and i used them at the same dose and frequency…. imo, they are pretty similar… although the morphine is more sedating than the oxycodone…..

Hi Jerry,

According to an equianalgesic (opioid) chart from Stanford, Oxycodone is said to be about 1 1/2 times more potent than Morphine on a milligram to milligram basis. They conclude that 120 mg of oral Oxycodone is similar to taking 180 mg of oral Morphine.

However, this is not to say that each patient will achieve the same effects just by taking an equivalent dose; as to my understanding, each drug can still effect each individual differently (with regards to side effects, overall efficacy, etc).

Hopefully this info helps to answer your question! Does anyone else have personal experience switching between these two medications?

Does any one know how many Roxicodone 15mg are equal to 120 mgs of morphine? My Dr had to meet me on a Sunday. I was hit from behind and my truck was totaled. This was 2 weeks ago. My shoulder and neck are killing me. I can't even turn my head.

I went today to get my morphine script and they said they can not write one for it anymore and wrote one for oxycodone. Can you just STOP taking morphine and switch to oxycodone? I have taken morphine for years...

I take the oxycodone 15. The they work for me. I'm just seeing all these people say that Dr.a are making them switch. I just got hit in the back and totaled m truck. This is another injury added to my recovery of 3 herniated disc. DDD, my C1 is damaged since birth so I'm luck to even be walking . But this neck injury is making the pain unbearable. I don't know what would help my 15s. I walk around with an ice pack all day on my neck and shoulder. And the migraine headache controls my day. My Dr. Gave me firocet to try. It helps for a few hours but then is back. I guess I an just worried about what will help this pain along with my oxy15s.

My doc says by gov. standards 90mg of morphine is the top amount allowed per day. How many mg of oxycodone does that equal?

Re: Ginny (# 6)

Hi, I was originally prescribed 10mg 4x day of oxymorphone (opana) IR for short actin or break thru pain, and 30mg Er 2xday for long actin. I myself, actually requested to be lowered down to a lesser dosage mg and less x per day cause I simply didn't need that much to make it thru the day, and knowing I will need to be on meds for manyany years to come, I'd rather keep it as low as possible so I don't build an unnecessary tolerance ,but at least I was finally making it thru my day, without the pain, and even so after lowering it down to what I have been on for the past several months. I had been taking 5 mg oxymorphone 3xday for my short acting med and have been on 30mg of morphine sulfate (ms contin) 2xday as needed. Until this past week, at my Dr. Apt, they told me that they are not allowed to write Oxymorphone (opana) anymore, not the IR or the ER, its not allowed to be given, unless it's for someone having it a after/post surgery, etc. And so they took away my oxymorphone 5mg x3 day that was working awesomely for the last few months, and wrote me another script for More Morphine! In addition to the 30mg Er 2xday now I'm getting Morphine 15mg IR 2xday so I'm taking a total equivalent of 90mg of Morphine ever y day because they have been told they can't write our script s for oxymorphone anymore! I don't know where u r at, but I'm in middle/southern Tenn. I think if they are gonna make a rule or law for our Dr.'s to go by..they need to make sure they all get the same damn memo, and that they are all reading the same information!!!

Re: In pain (# 3)

Ive been switched from oxy to morphine sulfate and the morphine does nothing. The agony is unreal and I’m ready to give up. Although I pay close to $2000 a month for insurance they refuse to pay for oxy.

Re: Tired and in pain (# 5)

Well, 30mg of oxy is = to 45mg of morphine. This means that oxy is about 1.5 x stronger than morphine, mg for mg. So if you had 1mg of oxy, you'd need about 1.5mg of morphine to match it (morphine is weaker so you'd need more....about 50% more).

You should be able to math it out from here. ???? Good luck!

Yea, Federal Law decided that the risks outweighed the benefits and they just got outlawed nationwide. They are strongly "advising" the docs to do away with giving out the Oxycodone (Roxicodone) 5mg, 10mg & 15mg IR too, from what my Pain Dr told me. Also, lots of other people have had them recently changed, including me. Was taking 10mg Oxycodone IR 3x day. Now getting 15mg of Morphine IR, the same 3x day...more mg - yet doesn't help as much. I really think pretty soon "Pain Management" of any decent quality is going to be a thing of the past.

This is all making me sick and sad. How is it that there supposedly "moral" politicians can claim that they are looking to curb society opiate problems by forcing pain patients into the illegal trap of heroin just because we innocently NEED a way to control the pain? If you have a known pain disorder, and you're FORCED to go to the emergency room it's actually illegal now to treat pain patients? What the hell is wrong with these so called goody goodies who have never had a day of pain in their lives, actually FORCING us to break the law or go the illegal route just to relieve pain that is caused by real, empirically anatomically proven pain??

The REAL war on drugs in this country is NOT providing any legal means to live with at least a livable amount of pain, or when doing something illegal becomes your last option? It's discrimination right on the face of it, and by this alone they are killing millions of people through no fault of the victim. That's pure unadulterated MURDER.

What I want to know is, why "crack down" on a severely disabled group of people, forcing them to take place in something both deadly and illegal? People, especially pain patients need to deal with this head on, but how?

Re: Susanna (# 14)

Yes, it is murder. My Mom has been in the hospital for 5 days for a blood clot. She also has a tomor pressing against her spine, so she takes 170 mg per day oxycodone for pain. They refused to give her enough oxycodone to control her pain in the hospital, and she has been in excruciating pain here all week. The whole family has asked repeatedly for them to allow her to have 170 mg per day, but we couldn't convince anyone. So she agreed to hospice. Now she is purposely dying of thirst in 1 week vs. letting the cancer take her life in 6 to 8 weeks. I'm beyond upset!! Is there any legal recourse? This is insane.

Re: Yardley2222 (# 15)

Do not let this pain take control of the remaining time she has with you!!! You phone the college of physicians and surgeons of B.C. or whatever country your in and tell them what is happening. You need to speak to mental health and tell them they need to do something right now!!
