How Long Will Shark Cartilage Last After The Expiration Date

Found 4 new bottles of shark cartilage and 7 new bottles of Red Yeast Rice in the back of my closet. All show an expiration date of 9/15. Are they still good to use?

No pharmacist could or would give me a timeframe for which these pills might still be good, so I contacted the manufacturer directly. I was told that these were out of date (which I already knew) and that I should not use them. Thus, I have thrown them in the trash. Thank you for posting my original message.

Having done some work in missions and in inner city clinics and foreign countries I have seen med's used well after their expiration dates. Part of my personal opinion is that many expiration dates are set to increase sales, this goes for foods as well as medicines.
Thank God we don't have scientific expiration stamped on us, as I have seen canned food thrown out 1 week or so after the date on the can - which is the sell by date..

I'm on the same page as you when it comes to identifying reasons why many medications still remain good well after the expiration date. Actually, there have been studies published by Harvard University depicting the quality of certain drugs still being intact 10-15 years after they "expired". The New York Times even has an article (both of which can be Googled) describing medications that were 20-40 years old still retaining efficacy. Granted, there are many factors that attribute to such longevity, but this in and of itself speaks volumes about the safety of drugs that are only 1-2 years old, not to mention those drugs that are tossed in the trash out of caution, only 1 month after their supposed expiration. I think one of the other concerns people don't discuss too often is that even if the active ingredient retains its integrity, there's still the inactive or non-medicinal components which may not have been accounted for... Nevertheless, I digress. If something is stored properly, there's a lot less room for speculation. Thank you for sharing your information!
