How Long Does It Take For Effexor To Work

Updated

Hi there

I have been on citalopram for 6 years. I recently withdrew from that and started taking 75mg with 10mg of citalopram last week and was feeling ok. Now i have stopped the citalopram and am on 150g of effexor. For the last few days I have been feeling a lot worse than i originally was I am not motivated and feeling very depressed. Is this normal? will it start workinng. I really don't want to try another one I have already tried 4 different ssris. Fingers crossed this goes away

You are most likely experiencing a bit of a double whammy, side effects from starting the Effexor, as well as withdrawal effects from stoping the Citalopram. It will likely take 4 to 5 weeks for things to settle down and for you to be able to tell how well this will work for you.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight changes.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Hello there,

Just stumbled into your post...as in the previous reply, it does take a few weeks going through a series of side effects that show in the form of exactly what you're the meds are meant to combat...this is my 11th year on Venlafaxine. I've been 'normal', my psychiatrist does not accept 'better'. As I know that my daily 225 ml will have long term effects, I just reduced my dose to 175...my doc refuses to reduce it. This is my second attempt in two years. I took advantage a 'nice' busy period of my professional life to do it. It was pretty tough for a few days, but I made it through with some Xanax. So Venlafaxine is great, but think of remaining under 250 ml with some personal effort and your doc's monitoring. Good luck

It affects t craving part of t brain im told. I would try something else.
