Horrible Body Aches, Headaches And High Fevers

Updated

I have been taking contrave for 8 days, took the second dose and woke up the next day with a headache. Took my morning dose and ended up with a high fever (102) headache and just achy all over. Haven't taken it since then and still have fevers and neck ache. How long will this last?

Hi mitchel,

Sorry to hear about your experience with Contrave. From what I've researched, headaches, fever, & joint/muscle pain are all listed as potential side effects associated with this medication. While I'm not aware of how long these symptoms last, I do know that if I were in such a predicament, I wouldn't allow myself to continue taking something that had that kind of impact on my body and general well-being...and think you made a good decision by discontinuing it. One thing to take into consideration though, upon determining 'how long this medication works in your body before being excreted', is to look at the estimated half-life of each active ingredient (Bupropion + Naltrexone). According to wiki, Bupropion has metabolites with a half-life ranging anywhere from 3-36 hours, while Naltrexone and its metabolites reportedly have a half-life of 4-13 hours. It's agreed upon by many medical professionals that after 3 consecutive half-lifes, a drug is considered to be eliminated from your body. Given this knowledge, if you were to make an estimate based on the long end of the half-life spectrum (36 hours), this may mean that it could take 4.5 days after you stop taking Bupropion for it to be completely excreted. Keep in mind that these are only intended to be estimates as there are several other factors that help determine how long a drug works in your body before being excreted (such as: age, weight, metabolism, body chemistry, during/frequency of use etc...). But if you don't feel any relief from the side effects after several days of discontinued treatment, I would just encourage you to contact your doctor for assistance in managing/alleviating those symptoms in the meantime.

Hope this helps!
