Given To 16 Yo For Sleep In 1998

has anyone ever heard of deep sleep from a sleeping pill taken by a child mistaken for a seizure
the medicine was phenobarbital and my some was 14 and we couldnt wake
him up twice his eyes were rolling and he was dianosed with epilepsy but
not we are being told it may have been a reaction from the pill he is
30 now and seizure free on dilantin ever since but the levels have
always been low only 3.5 instead of the 10-20
he stopped taking the sleeping pill after the 2nd seizure

now after taking the meds all these years we went to the epilepsy
foundation the the neurologist said he believes he is not epileptic at
all

he was prescribed that phenabarb for sleeping after a car accidented he
was having no seizures then first one was at 5am in his sleep then 3
days later at 5am in his sleep

Just to clarify, your son didn't begin to have seizures until after taking the phenobarbital?

Based on my research, Phenobarbital is a barbiturate and the most widely used anticonvulsant worldwide, and the oldest still commonly used. It also has sedative and hypnotic properties, which would explain why he was given it as a sleep aid, but as with other barbiturates, it has been replaced by the benzodiazepines for these indications. The World Health Organization recommends its use as first-line for partial and generalized tonic-clonic seizures (those formerly known as grand mal) in developing countries.

I haven't read anything listing seizures as a side effect of this medication since that is what it is used to treat, but that doesn't mean it's not a possibility. The only thing I can think of is that maybe your son's brain had a negative reaction because he was given it as a sleep aid- even though it's meant to treat those with epilepsy.

when my son was 16 i tried waking him up but just his eyes were rolling and shallow breathing called the ambulance they got there went to er and eeg was given but it was fine they sent him home
2 days later the same thing happened only this time the eeg was positive and they diagnosed him as epileptic
they tried saying he has cocaine in his system but this turned out to be his barbituate sleeping pill now he has been on dilantin for 15 years and has remained seziure free on dilantin levels 2.3,
he stopped the sleeping pill the day dilantin was started

went to the epilepsy foundation last year but they refuse to give him EEG because they say there is no reason too

could he have been misdiagnosed
