Fluorouracil Problems

Updated

I'm having an unusually severe skin irritation when applying my Fluorouracil creme (5%) this time. This is the 3rd time using this drug, but the first time on my cheek. Is this area, perhaps, more sensitive than the top of my head where I've used in the past ? After 8 days of application 2X a day, my cheek is near "raw". Comments, thoughts or suggestions? Thank you, in advance, for your time. (As background, I had melanoma surgery 3 times on OPPOSITE cheek in past 5 months.

Hello, Bob! How are you?

Yes, the skin on your face is generally more sensitive. However, you should consult your doctor to have it checked out.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Verwon: I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my query. I have started using Aquaphor ointment and am beginning to see/feel some positive results. I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. The reaction to the Flourouracil cream was totally different on my cheek than it had been on the top of my head. The weeping, scaling, bleeding and tight leathery surface on my cheek was quite painful. I'm moving in the right direction now. Again -- my gratitude. Thanks, friend.

Re: Bob (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

I have been using Efudex for 3 weeks twice a day on my chest and neck. 2 more to go. The effects have been dramatic!!! Painful, very inflamed, tender to touch, tight skin that cracks and oozes. This causes the oozing areas to stick to my clothes. My dermatologist says this treatment will reduce the AK by 86%. He said no other treatment will do this. PDT was the least effective. I have fair British skin and blue eyes. I wear sunblock but obviously not enough. I’m outside playing tennis at least 5 days a week. No more tennis tank tops for me!
